SPOOL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May a, 1922,
Application filed May 5, 1920. Serial No. 379,130.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND H. AHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved stand used for holding a spool of cotton or ball of cord or cotton such as is used in crocheting and one object of the invention is to provide a stand of the character described so constructed that it will remain in an upright position and not be liable to be overturned.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this stand that it may be used for carrying a relatively small spool or a relatively large spool or cord or cotton wound to form a ball.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the stand that it will provide a good support for the spool of thread or cord which is formed into a ball.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the stand that it will be strong and durable.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein V Figure 1 is a view showing the improved stand in side elevation.
, Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the stand.
Figure 8 is a view showing the center pin in elevation.
This stand is provided with a base 10. which may be formed of any suitable metal and which will be preferably formed of brass or other material which will take high polish and thus present a good appearance.
r The base is formed of sheet metal and will have a bottom plate 11 formed of lead or some other heavy metal which will give the necessary weight to cause the stand to remain in its vertical position and prevent it from being easily turned over. If desired a facing of felt, cloth or any other suitable ma terial may be provided to prevent scratchlng when the same is placed upon highly polished furniture.
The center pin 12 upon which the relatively small spool will be placed is provided with a thickened lower end portion formmg a collar 13 upon which the relatively small spool will rest and upon which the sleeve 14 will rest when placed upon the pin 12. The lower end of the pin 12 extends through the plate 15 and into the tapered upper end portion of the base 10 and will be secured by having solder poured into the upper portion of this base as shown at 16 before the bottom plate 11 is put in place. It will thus be seen that the pin and plate 15 will be securely held in place when the solder has hardened. The pin, plate 15 and sleeve 14 will be formed of the same kind of metal as the base 10 and it will thus be seen that the entire stand may be polished and provide a good appearance.
When this device is in use and a small spool is to be placed upon the stand, the sleeve 14 will be removed and the spool placed upon the pin 12. The spool will rest upon the upper end of the bearing collar 13 and will thus be supported in such a position that it may rotate freely. When a large spool is in use or thread or cord which has been formed into a ball, the spool or ball will be put in place after the sleeve 14 has been placed upon the pin 12. This large spool or ball will rest u on the plate 15 and may turn freely since t e sleeve 14 rotated easily upon the pin. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a device of the character described so constructed that it may be used in connection with small spools or relatively large spools and further that it may be used in connection with a ball of thread or cord.
What is claimed is:
1. A holder of the class described having a stem, a plate, a bearing on the stem, adjacent to the plate of greater diameter than the stem, said stem adapted to receive a spool to rest on the bearing as a base, and a filler sleeve of substantially the same diameter as said bearing applicable to the stem to rest on said bearing, whereby a spool of another size may be passed over the sleeve and bearing to rest on the plate.
2. A holder of the class described having a stem, a plate, a bearing on the stem, adjacent to the plate of greater diameter than the stem, said stem adapted to receive a spool to rest on the bearing as a base, and a filler sleeve of substantially the same diameter as 2 aue-e71 said bearing applicable to the stem to rest on In testimony whereof I aifiix my signature sald bearlng, whereby a spool of another slze 1n presence of two W1tnessesmay be passed over the sleeve and bearing FERDIN AND H AHL to rest on the plate, a stud extending irom: A
