Description

UNITED STATES JAMES W. MILLER, 0F SHANNON, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVENI ENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,731, dated May 14, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Press, invented by JAMES W. MlLLER, 0f Shannon, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi.
My invention consists of a lever toggle,
jointed bars, and a Windlass or capstan Working the follower, the lever being connected by its short arm to a stern rising up from the follower, and by its long arm to the toggle-jointed bars, and the capstan being used to force the arms together by a rope and pulleys, all as hereinafter described. v Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line w a: of Fig. 1.
A is the press-follower, with a stem or bar,
- B, rising upward from its upper side. C is the lever, mounted on a stand, D, and connected at the end of the short arm to said stem. E represents the toggle-jointed bars, connected at the top to the long arm-of said bar by a bar, F, capable of being shifted to vary the distance of the lever from said top of the bars E as the Work progresses and it is needful for working the follower when it is low down in the press. The said toggle-bars are jointed at the other ends to the platform of the machine.
J is a rope, and G the capstan for working the toggle-bars to actuate the lever. Said rope passes from one to the other of the members of the toggle-bars over pulleys H, and thence through a suitable guide, I, to the capstan Gr. K is a guide for the ropes, between the two members of the toggle-bars, to keep them in order and prevent twisting together. It is pivoted at one end to the post D, so that the other end, through which the ropes pass, may rise and fall with the toggle-bars. The lever C is capable of being shifted up or down on the post, as circumstances may require. The posts D are to be securely braced, and the ends of the toggle-bars may be shod with iron.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the press-follower A, lever C, connecting-bar F, toggle-jointed bars E, rope J, and the capstan G, all substantially in the manner herein specified.
JAMES W. MILLER.
