Description

"UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM B. HOLLOWELL, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSE55.
Specification forming fart of Letters Patent No. 150,573, dated May 5, 1874 applicationfiled March'l4, 1874.
To all'whom it may concern.:
Be it known thatl I, WILLIAM B. HOLLO- WELL, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Press, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap but powerful hand-press, adapted to be constructed and used on plantations without very skilled labor. i
The essential features of the invent-ion are a lever and windlass for forcing the follower down by a vertically-moving follower-stem, the operation being by several movements of the lever, each one forcing it a certain distance,
thus dividing the labor and increasing the power, so that the bales may be made as small and dense as by the ordinary power-presses.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved press, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the press-case; B, the follower; G,`the follower stem or rod 5 I), the lever; E, the windlass F, the rope 5 G, the pulley for the rope, and II pawl for holding the windlass by the pins of the hand-wheel. The followerstem has slots I through it at suitable distances apart for the pin J, by which the force of the lever is communicated to the follower, the pin being shifted from one slot to another as the follower is forced down, and the lever raised for another operation. While the lever is being raised, the follower is held down by a pin passed through the stem under the beams. lhe rope F passes over a pulley, G, on the top of the standards K, to raise the lever by reversing the motion of the windlass. The lever is pivoted in the upper end of a strong bar, L, which extends down to the platform, and is so jointed to it at P that the strain is delivered on the press by compression, and the bar is free to swing with the vibrations of the end of the lever, so that the follower is enabled to work in a right line through a guide in the top of the frame. M is a windlass for raising the follower by the cord N, and it is also for tightening the ties, the shaft being arranged alongside of the press-case and extended the whole breadth of it suitably for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and `desire to secure by Letters Patenty The combination, with movable pin J and a follower-stem, C, apertured at several points, of a subjacently-notched lever, D, fulcrumed on a pivoted bar, L, as and for the purpose specified.
VILLIAM BEN. HOLLOWELL.
