IMPROVEMENT IN BALING-PRESSES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,526, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, J onN I. WILLIAMS, of'
Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and lmprovedUotton and Hay Press 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, an d exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan of the press. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in the line .r x.

This invention relates to the construction of a press for baling cotton or hay; and it consists n an arrangement of levers by which great power is exerted on-the compressing-box with a comparatively small expenditure of force in the prime mover, which may be either manual or horse power.
The machine is very strong and simple, and may be made on the plantation by an ordinary mechanic, and managed by common laborers.

C C, Fig. 2, are heavy cross-1 imbers, on which are fastened four upright timbers, D D D D'. Against the inside of the uprights D D is placed a heavy cross-beam, E, which rests upon C G, and extends considerably beyond at one end.
Between the uprights D D is a rock-bar, a., to which is affixed the packing-box F in such manner that it is turned to a horizontal or perpendicular position. The follower or headblock G is attached to a short arm, c, pivoted to a driver or compressing'lever, H, which at one end is pivoted at s to a timber-tug or connectingrod, b, which is also pivoted at t to the extremity ofthe beam E; and at the other end the lever H is pivoted at g to an iron tug or rod, b', connected at n with the draft-lever l, which is pivoted at e to the end of the beam E. rlhe head of the compressing-ler'erH rests and traverses upon a timber, K, ruiming from one of the uprights D back on the top of one of the cross-timbers C. The follower-arm a' rests and slides on a bar, c, which connects H and K, to both of which it is pivoted to'` allowsome play in the movement of the compressing-lever H. The fulcruln s of the lever H at the rear end rests on a stand or block, d.
At one corner of the press is a segmental platform or track, L L, upon which travels a roller, f, attached to the under side of the draft-lever E, to support and move it freely when operated. Attached to the outer end of the driver or compressing-lever H at g is a rope, h h, which passes through a hook or ring-bolt, 1'., on the end of the draft-lever I,
to a capstan, M, to which it is fastened for winding up.
The press is operated by one or more men at the capstan M, in the usual way, by the lever K; or it may be worked by horse-power.
The followerGhaving been withdrawn from the packing-box F by pushing lever I and the driver H back sufficiently, the box F is turned on the roller-bar a, to which itis attached, and takes a perpendicular position, in which position it is held by a spring-catch, Z. It is then filled with cotton or hay, by cramming as closely as possible, when it is again turned to a horizontal position and secured by a catchspring, Z. By turning the capstan M and windin g the rope h h the draft-lever I is moved forward. rIhe roller ftravelin g on the trackL L and drawing upon the driving-lever H forces the follower or headblock G into the packingbox F.
It will be observed that the relative position ot the levers I and H with each other and the capstan M is such that the lever-power increases in the ratio ot the increased resistance of the follower Gr in the operation of compressing, and that, consequently, without any additional force being required in the prime mover on the capstan, the compression ofthe bale is fully secured.
The bale is strapped or roped in the usual way, and the operation, as described, repeated. Suitable doors are provided in the usual way at the bottom ot' the packin gbox for inclosing the bale when being compressed, and opening to deliver it.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the capstan M, the horizontal draftlever I, the roller f on the track L L, the driving,` or compressing, lever H, the
follower G, and the tumbling-box F, oon-l structed, arranged, and operated substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
