To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, J AMES Cnosn, a citize of the United States. residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to means for detachably securing the side member or rail of a bed to either the head board or the foot board, as the case may be. As is well known, the frame of a bed is customarily formed of four parts, the head and foot boards and the two side rails. For purposes of transportation the rails must be readily detachable from the head and foot boards and yet must be capable of firm connection therewith, and the manner of attaching the rails to the head and foot boards must be obvious from the construction itself, so that any inexperienced person may set up the bed when necessary. I have provided a construction which fulfils these requirements and which at the same time is inexpensive, and which may be readily applied to metal as well as to wooden beds.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bed equipped with my improved device; Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the latch for connecting the rail to either the head board or the foot board: Fig. 3 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the bracket carried by either the head board or foot board and provided with members adapted to engage with the latch member; Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the latch in position; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line VV of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View on line Vl-Vl of Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the head board of a bed having the posts 2 and 3. The foot board 4 is similarly provided with the posts 5 and 6. The head board and foot board are connected by the rails 7 and 8. which as shown, are in the form of angle-irons, but it is apparent that the subject-matter of my invention is readily applicable to other forms of rail.

Each end of each rail is provided with means for attachment to the particular posts with which it may be associated. This means comprise a pair of holes 9 through Specification of Letters Patent.

the depending leg of the angle adapted to receive studs 10 projecting from the flange 11 of a bracket formed by this flange and the plate 12 from which it is bent at right angles along the line 13. Means such as the screws 14: passing through the holes 15 are provided for attaching the plate 12 to a post of the bed. A stiffening bar 16 re ceives the threaded ends 17 of the studs 10 and is thereby clamped against the flange 11. Its upper surface 18 is preferably flush with the upper edge 19 of the flange 11 so as to form a wide bearing surface for the hori zontal leg of the angle, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Each stud is provided with a por-= tion 20 of reduced diameter, thus dividing the head into an outer portion 21 provided with facets 22 for the accommodation of a wrench, and an inner flange portion 23. A. latch :24E is pivoted to the depending leg of the angle by means of a bolt 25 passing through the latch and angle and carrying the nut 26. This latch is provided with a pair of slots 27 adapted to engage the studs at the portion 20 of reduced diameter. That wall. 28 of each slot which is nearer to the bolt 25 is formed on an arc struck about the axis of the bolt, but the outer wall 29 is formed on a curve which is much flatter, the are struck about the axis of the bolt being indicated in dotted lines 30 in Fig. 4. It will be observed, as a result, that when the latch is forced down over the studs a tension will be created in the latch between the studs and the bolt 25, this tension promoting the firm locking together of the parts. The latch is also tapered toward the lower edge 31, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, thus drawing the angle and flange 11 tightly together. It will be seen that when the latch is thus forced home no strain is brought upon it by movement of the bed, or a relative shifting of its parts, other than that of compression, since if the rail is lifted the shoulder 23 of the stud will enpage the upper wall of the hole 9 and carry the strain. whereas a relative lateral move ment of head or foot board and rails will merely tend to throw strain upon the latch in the direction of the axis of the studs. There is thus no tendency whatever for the latch to loosen, but under most strains it is actuallv held more securely in place.

While I have illustrated and described only one specific embodiment of my device, I appreciate that it is susceptible of wide ofseparable members, and a latch carried.
