IVILLIAM PLEASANT SMITH, OF LEXINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
BED-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,557, dated February 27, 1894.
Application filed December l, 1893. Serial No. 492,506. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom 'it 11m/y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PLEASANT SMITH, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Lexington, in the county of Davidson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Braces, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying,r drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in bed braces, and the object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which will be the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness and which will be thoroughly efficient and practical for the intended function.
The invention with this object in View consists in the combination with a bed frame of two continuous bracing or tightening wires extending from the corners and sides and of an adjusting device of peculiar and novel construction acting on the wires to draw them taut and retain the parts of the frame rigid, as will appear from the following disclosure.
The figure of the drawing represents a plan view of a bed frame and my improved and novel bracing or tightening device applied.
I would state that my device is specially adapted for use in bracing or securing the parts of a bed frame although it may be effectively employed for tightening other articles of furniture.
In the drawing: A designates the end sections or boards and B the side sections or ralsof a bed frame with which I employ my device.
To the corners of the frame are secured eyes or hooks C and to the sides centrally thereof are also secured eyes or hooks D, and the ends of the two continuous wires E are connected to the eyes C and from thence pass through the adjusting ring F, and through the side eyes D, and the adjusting ring is composed of the two sections E', pivoted together at F2, and having at their free ends the ears F3 which receive the adjusting screw F4, having head E5 provided with opening to Ieceive nail or implement to turn the screw and it will be readily seen that the free ends of the ring may be brought near to each other or separated to any desired distance by the adjusting screw which action of course draws upon the bracing wires and causes them to secure the parts of the bed rigidly and thus the device is easy to operate, is entirely efficient and also practical and econoniical.
I claiml. The combination with the bed frame, wires connected to the corners andv sides thereof, and a split ring through which the Wires pass having an adjusting screw in the free or open ends thereof;
2. The combination with the bed frame, wires connected to the corners and sides thereof, and a split ring through which the wires pass having ears on its free or open ends to receive an .adjusting bolt for acting on the wires.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM PLEASANT SMITH.
Witnesses J. L. PEACOGK, WM. J. BYERLY.
