TTE @ATEB FATNT JAMES CLOSE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO NEW JERSEY TUBE COMPANY, OF HARRISON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BED AND OTHER ARTICLE OF FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. at, 191?.
' Application filed December 15, 1913. Serial No. 806,706.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES CLosn, a citizen of the United States. residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds and other Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed construction and concerns particularly a device for connecting the side rails to the head board and foot board. Beds are universally constructed so that they may be readily knocked-down; that is, the frame, consist-- ing of the head board, foot board, and side rails, may be detached from each other for purposes of transportation. In order to effect this, means must be provided for detachably connecting the rails to the end members. The device employed must be rugged and at the same time simple in its construction, so that any one handling the bedmay see at a glance its mode of operation and be enabled to set up or take down the frame. Many devices have been proposed for this purpose, particularly in connection with metal beds, but they have required an excessive weight of metal and have been more expensive in construction than the structure which I have devised.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of the frame of a bed; Fig. 2 is a detail View on an enlarged scale on line 11-11 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale showing the means of connecting the side rail to a post; Fig. 4 is a top view of the structure of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line VV of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line VIVI of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the posts showing the mortise therein; Fig. 8 is a perspective view illustrating the assembly of the strap and the associated parts adapted to be secured to the posts shown in Fig. 7
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the posts forming a portion of the head board of a bed having a foot board provided. with the posts 2. Each post is provided with a mortise or slot 8. A strap 4 having the projecting flanges 5 and 6 encircles the post, the space between the flanges being brought into alinement with the mortise 3. A filling-piece 7 is interposed in this space and has the tongue 8 adapted to enter the mortise 3. The flanges and filling-piece are provided with the axially alined openings 9 and 10, respectively, which are also adapted to be brought into alinement with the internally threaded openings 11 in one leg 12 of an angle bar 13. Studs 14 having the faced heads 15 and threaded extremities 16 are received in these axially alined openings, the threaded extremities screwing into the threaded openings 11, thus acting to clamp the parts together and constrict the strap 4 tightly about the post, the entire device thus forming a bracket which is firmly locked to the post not only by the constrictive action of the strap, but also by the engagement of the tongue 8 with the post. Neither relative rotation of the bracket with relation to the post, nor movement in a longitudinal dircction is possible. To the second leg 1.7 of the angle is permanently secured the angle bar 18 forming the lower member of the head board or foot board, as the case may be. Bolts 19 entering threaded openings 20 in the leg of the angle are provided for securing the parts together.
For detachably securing the side rails 21 to the respective posts to which they are attached, I have provided a construction which is described in detail and broadly claimed in my companion application Serial Number 806,705, of even date herewith. This construction comprises latches 22 pivoted to the side rails 23 and having slots 24 adapted to engage the heads of the studs 14:. The heads of the studs are provided with portions 25 of reduced diameter for the reception of the latches or keepers.
It will be seen that T have provided a construction which is exceedingly light and at the same time is rigid and very strong. Not only does the strap bind tightly against the outer surface of the post, but the tongue entering the slot in the post absolutely prevents any relative movement of the strap with respect to the post in either a longitudinal or circumferential direction. The device, while simple and cheap, is thus highly eflicient.
While I have illustrated and described only one specific embodiment of my invention, I appreciate that it is susceptible of wide application and I do not desire to be limited to the precise details shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a plurality of rails and means for joining them including a bracket supported upon said post, an angle iron, means for permanently securing one of said rails to one of the legs of said angle iron, a plurality of studs securing said angle iron to said bracket, a corresponding plurality of sockets carried by the other of said rails for the reception of said studs, and means for detachably locking said studs against re moval from said sockets.
2. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a strap surrounding said post, a horizontally disposed angle iron, means for securing one leg of said angle to said strap, said means acting to constrict the strap about the post, a rail and means on the rail adapted to cooperate with said strap for detachably securing said rail to said strap and angle iron.
3. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a strap surrounding the same having extending ends, a filling piece adapted to be interposed between said ends having a tongue adapted to enter an opening in said post, means for clamping said projecting ends and tongue together acting to constrict the strap about the post, a rail and means on the rail adapted to cooperate with said strap for detachably securing said rail to the bracket formed by said strap and filling-piece with the rail supported on the alining edges of the strap and filling-piece.
4:. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a strap surrounding the same having projecting ends, a filling-piece adapted to be received between said ends and having a tongue adapted to enter a slot in said post,
a stiffening member adjacent to one of said projecting ends and means adapted to clamp said ends, said filling-piece and said stiffen ing member together and thereby constrict the strap about the post in fixed position with relation thereto.
5. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a strap surrounding the same having projecting ends, a fi11ing-piece adapted to be "eceived between said ends and havin a tongue entering a slot in said post, a stifFening member in the form of an angle iron having one of its legs adjacent to one of said projecting ends, and a plurality of studs passing through the said projecting ends, filling-piece and adj acent leg to clamp the same together. and constrict the strap about the post.
6. In a bed or other article of furniture, a post, a strap surrounding the same having projecting ends, a filling-piece adapted to be received between said ends and having a tongue entering a slot in said post, a stiffening member in the form of an angle iron having one of its legs adjacent to one of said projecting ends, a plurality of studs passing through the said projecting ends, fillingpiece and adjacent leg to clamp the same together and constrict the strap about the post, a rail formed of an angle iron having a plurality of sockets in one leg thereof adapted to receive said studs, the inner surface of the other leg being adapted to seat upon the alined edges of the'projecting ends of the strap, filling-piece and angle iron, and means for detachably securing the rail in place. 7
