Description

(No Model.)
vW. P. HUSKINS.
BEDSTEAD FRAME.
Patented Jan. 30, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. HOSKINS, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
BEDSTEAD-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,685, dated January 30, 1894.
Application led August 12, 1892. Serial No, 442,880. (No model.) Patented in England March 5, 1886,11'0. 3,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. HosKINs, of Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Frames, (for which I have been granted English Letters Patent No. 3,108 on March 5, 1886,) of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improvementin bedstead frames in which the cross bars at the end for supporting the bed bottom or mattress are elevated above the side rails with which they are connected.
My invention is particularly well adapted to use in connection with the metallic frames of iron bedsteads and it is such a frame that I have shown to illustrate my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a top plan View of the frame, the end of one of the cross bars at one end being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of one corner of the frame, showing it adaptedv to 'an 'upright post.
The side rails are denoted by A and A. They are provided at their ends with blocks a to Which they are rigidly fixed, or they might be formed integral therewith. Said blocks at their outer ends are provided with dove-tail projections a adapted to be inserted downwardly into corresponding dove-tail sockets in pieces b fixed to the post or their support B.
The end cross pieces which consist of angle bars C C having a general U shape form in cross section with the opening toward the interior of the frame. I prefer to make the angle bars of two longitudinal sections c, c', each consisting of one side and a back, and to assemble them by placing their back portions in position to overlap and restin juxtaposition toeach other. In such position the two sections may be secured either by rivets D at proper intervals throughout their length, or asingle rivet might be employed about midway of the length of the sections and their ends firmly secu red by being cast into or 0therwise xed to end brackets E.
The blocks a at the ends of the side rails are provided with dove-tail projections a2 in addition to the dove-tail projections c hereinbefore referred to and the latter, a2, are preferably located upon the top of the block and are constructed to enter dovetail sockets e formed in the under side of the blocks E.
It is obvious that the dove-tail projections and sockets might be reversed, the projections being on the block E and the socket formed. on the piece a and that they might be arranged on other parts of the pieces than the upper and lower sides respectively.
What I claim isl. The frame work for supporting a bed bottom or mattress, comprising side rails provided at their ends with means for attaching them to the ends of abedstead and cross bars having a general Ushape in cross section and adapted to engage and rest on the upper sides of the side rails, the ends of the cross bar and the upper sides of the side rails being provided, the one with a dovetailed projection and the other with a corresponding dovetailed socket for uniting the cross bars to the side rails, substantially as set forth.
2. The frame for supporting a bed bottom or mattress comprising side rails provided at their ends with joint pieces, cross bars at the ends of the side rails provided at their ends with joint pieces, the said cross bars consisting of channel pieces formed in longitudinal sections the outer sides of which overlap and rest in juxtaposition to each other, the ends of the sections being fixed to the joint pieces and the said j oint pieces of the cross bars and side rails being provided the one with dovetail projections and the other with dove-tail sockets adapted to receive the said dove-tail projections, substantially as set forth.
WM. P. HOSKINS.
