"HW-immuun w1 m (LW, t" m Anonqfrs garba A. iguert UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. BROWN, 0F MACUN, GEORGIA.
WASTE-RECEPTACLE.
To all whom 'it may concern." 1
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Imroved Waste-Receptacle, of which the folowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a receptacle for receiving ashes, refuse, garbage, or any sort of vwaste material.
' The object of my invention is to provide a Waste receptacle which will automatically close after using, thus retaining any dust arising from the deposit of ashes or other material of like nature, and preventing the escape of noxious odors from the refuse and laced therein.
er' object of my invention is to provide a receptacle' for holdin Waste matter which can be placed out o doors to be emptied by the scavengers without danger o f the contents andthe inside of the recep tacle becoming wet in case of rain.
Lastly, itis my object to make a receptacle which will be tightly closed, so that the contents will be `inaccessible to iiies, etc., and will be retained Without spilling while being re1noved,thus insuring a clean and sanita disposal of waste matter.
n' carrying out the objects above enumerated, I employ in the preferred embodiment of my invention the form of receptacle and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawin in 'which similar reference charac ters re er to corresponding parts throughout the several views. 1 v Figure 1 is a view 1n elevation of the top portion of the receptacle.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the receptacle with a art thereof shown in section.
'g. 3 is a side elevation of the receptacle. Fig. '4 is 4an. 'enlarged sectional view V through the cover of the receptacle on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
The'body of the receptacle 1 is a common forni of garbage can provided with side handles and havin longitudinal guards y extendin to within a short distance of the top an bottom of the can, but the top opening of the receptacle, instead of being in a. plane parallel -with the plane of the base, lies in a plane inclined to the plane of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application filed September 8, 191.6. Serial No. 118,653.
of said body, I provide a roll or flange .2
designed to receive and interlock with the upturned flange 8 on the periphery of the cover. y
The cover 4 also carries a downwardly projecting circumferential ilange 5 adapted to overlap and snugly t the upper edge of the bod of the receptacle.
It wi l be noted that the depending iiange 5 is situated tothe right of the axial supporting means 7 shown in Fi 3, and the body fiange 3 extends to the le t of said supporting means, ,said flanges, together with the cover 4, uniting to form a waterproof top for said receptacle.
itted in sockets 6 attached to the upper portion of the inner face of the receptacleV body 1, or by other suitable means, is a rod 7 on which the receptacle cover is axially mounted by' means, such, for example, `as straps 8.
The flange 3 on the cover 4. is broken at 9 to provide an aperture for draining oi water collecting on the cover, said aperture 9 being in registry with an aperture l() located at the lowermost point of the inclined top opening and through the wall of the body 1.
In order to bring about the automatic closing of the cover i, after the material is deposited in the receptacle, I position the cover 4 on rod 7 in such amanner that the rod 7 does not pass through the center of gravity of the cover, but is eccentrically fastened on that side ot the center of the cover may be attached to the upper portion of said incmied cover falling to the right of tho V axial support-shown in Fig. 3.
In using my waste receptacle, the material may be deposited therein by inai'nially depressing the lower portion of the inclined cover, or it will be perceived that the weight of the material may frequently be suiciently great to ovexbalance the counter- Weight, tending'to close the cover of the receptacle, in which case the material may be emptied on the cover from which itwill descend into the receptacle by gravity, automatically opening said cover, the roll or iiangeQ serving to retain the material in place on the cover before the opening thereof, and preventing the overiow of material While sliding from said cover into the receptacle.
When exposed to rain, the interior ot the. receptacle and contents areY kept dry by means of flanges 2 and 5, and the water, as fast as it falls on the inclined cover. is collected by the flange 3 conducted tl'iroiigh the apertures 9 and 10, and discharged outside the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire.I to secure .by LettcrS Patent:
1. A waste receptacle having ay cover axially mounted in and normally closing the t-op opening thereof. and extending upon both Hides ot tlie axial line ot support, the area ot' said cover on one side oli tlie axial line of support being greater than the area on the. other Side, thereo'l, tlie periphery ot' the greater area being provided with a dowiiturned flange adapted to engage the exterior of tlie upper edge ot the wall of t-liel receptacle. and the. peripheryY ot' the smaller area iitting within the opening of the receptacle.
2. A wastereceptacle-liaviiig a cover axiall)7 mounted in and normally closing the top openinge thereof, and extending upon both Sides ot' the axial line of support, the area of I@aid rover on one Side ofthe axial line of Support being greater than the area on the. other side thereof, the periphery of the greati" area eoiitaeling with the. upper et'lgo oi: tlie wall ol llie receptacle. and the periphery oi tlie smaller area provided with au iiptliriied [lange interlocking with a roll or lange on the upper edge of the wall of tlieI receptacle.
Si. A waste i'ereptaele having a cover axially mounted in and normally closing the, top opening tliei'eoh` and extending'upon both Iaides of llieaxial line ol. support, the area. olb said rover on one side olfthe axial line of Support heilig greater llian tlie area oii llie other side. tliereol`` the periphery ol the greater area lieiii'g provided with a downturned llaiige adapted to engage the exterior it' Ihe upper edge. of llie wall olE the, ria'eptaele, and the periphery ol? tlie smaller .area provided with an upturned Harige interlocking with a roll or flange on the upper edge of .the wall of the receptacle.
l. A waste receptacle having a top opening in a plane inclined to tlie plane of the base. a corel' normally closing the receptacle axially mounted in the top opening thereof, and extending upon both sides of the, axial line of support, the area of said cover on one eide .of the axial line of support being greater than the area on the other side tliereot', .the periphery of the greater area of said cover contacting with the upper edge ot the wall of the receptacle, andthe periphery of the smaller'area of the cover fitting within Said openiiw.
i. .lhc combination with a waste receptaelehaviiig its open end in a plane inclined to the plane of the base, of a cover axially mounted in said opening and 'extending v'upon both yidee ot' the axial line ot" support, 4the rover heilig heavier at one side ot' the axial line of .support than at the other lSide, and means for draining Sald cover. Y
l'i, The combination ol' a waste. receptacle 'having its open en'd in a. plane inclined to the plane of the base, of a cover axially mounted in said opening and extending upon both sides of the axial line ot' support, the area of the cover at one side of the axial line ol support being greater than the area at the other side, and means for d 'ainiig said rover. y
7. 'llie combination with a wast-e receptacle having its top opening in a plane 1n- -clincd to 'the plane' ot' the base, ot' a cover on the lower edge of said body opening` and4 an aperture in said cover ange in registry with an ope-ning in the body of saidreceplaele, as and for the purposes .eet 4forth. l
ln testimony whereof I have signed my naine tothe lapeeitieation in tlie `preSeiu-e of two subscribing witnesses.
