which can be swung out for the purpose ofreceiving the garbage. This can is contained in the lower part of a frame or casing which is provided with a flue to carry off odors. A screen is provided to keep flies out of the can. In the upper part of the casing is a basket for waste paper, which is removable.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device in open position.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 8 indicates a garbage can having at its lower front edge a pivot rod 6 the ends of which are mounted in bearing hooks 6 on the front standards 13 of an outer frame or casing, so that the garbage can may be swung in or out to close or open the same. This can is located in the bottom part of an outer casing which includes the front standards 13, a rear standard 13*, an outer shell 15 and a lower brace or strap 12, fastened.

The can has a handle 25 at the top, and the rod 6 is bent to form a lower handle 24. A sliding catch 22, connected to a handle 21 working through a slot in the front plate of the casing 15 may be pushed down to catch the back wall of the garbage can and hold the same in tilted position, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to remove the can, as for emptying the same, the catch is pulled up, permitting the can to be swung out and removed. A strip 11 extends across the bottom of the frame, and supports a flat spring 10 upon which the bottom of the can strikes when the can is swung in, in order to cushion the impact.

A screen 9 is hinged at 9 to the front of the casing, in position to rest on the top of the can, and this screen has a curved runner or rod 7 on the underside thereof. When the can is swung in-or out on its pivot the upper rear edge of the can travels along this runner, and supports the screen so that it will drop into place on top of the can when the latter is swung in. This makes the can fly proof, and is a decided advantage in a device of this kind, the action being automatic and not dependent on servants or others who might forget to place an ordinary cover on the can.

In the upper rear part of the casing is a flue 16, having a fly screen 1 1 at its lower end, and connected at its upper end to a ventilating pipe 17 which may be extended as high as desired. In apartment houses and the like there will be one or more of the devices for, each floor, with a ventilating pipe leading from each device to a main ventilator pipe extending from the bottom to the top of the building. This is a matter of detail which will be arranged according to local conditions.

The upper front part of the casing has a compartment with a bottom 15'', and a lid 19, which compartment receives a wire basket 20 for waste paper and the like.

This basket can be removed for emptying.

By the means described there is provided a combined garbage and waste paper receptacle which will be sanitary and odorless, and convenient for the deposit and removal of such wastematter. The lower part of the casing is open at the sides and bottom, and consequently there is no place for dirt or overflow from the garbage can to collect and become foul. It will be noticed, also, that when the garbagecan is in place it projects upwardly into the closed part of the outer casing, that is above the lower edge of the side walls 15, so that any fumes rising from the canwill pass upwardly. into the ventilating flue;
