Be it known that I, CARL A. MIKKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olmsted, in the county of Pulaski, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Harrie and Trace Connectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hame and trace connectors and has special reference to an improvement on the hame and trace connector shown in my prior Patent #1,188,299, patented June 20, 1916.

The principal object of the invention is to improve the general construction of the hame and trace connector shown in the above mentioned patent.

A second important object of the invention is to provide a hame and trace connector of this character wherein the hook portion of the device may be made of malleable metal, such as malleable iron and the plate, which prevents chafing, may be made of ordinary plate metal such as sheet iron or mild sheet steel.

A third important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character so as to hold the hook away from the chafing plate.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.

In carrying out the objects of the invention there is provided a malleable iron portion which consists of shank; 10 having a hook 11 formed on one end, the bill of the hook being directed inward toward the shank and within the opening of the shank there being provided a prong 12 so as to form a circuitous passage 13 for the admission of the link 011 the end of a trace.

From the other end of the shank 10 projects a pair of spaced arms 14c which lie in a plane parallel to the plane of the hook but oifset inwardly therefrom toward the body ofthe animal when the hames are in position. On these arms are hooks 15 which are arranged at right angles to the first hook and engage in suitable openings in a hame plate 16 clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2. On the inner side of the hooks 15 is a rabbet 17 which extends across the inner faces of the arms at their junction with the shank 10 and on the inner face of the rabbet thus formed are lugs 18 which project inwardly for a purpose hereinafter to be described. There is also provided a third lug l9 projecting from the inner side of the hook and having a reduced end 20 so as to provide a shoulderbetween the reduced end and the body of the third lug.

At 21 is a plate having one edge seated in the rabbet and provided with suitable openings through which the lugs 19 and 18 project, the plate being stopped from movement on the lug 19 by the shouldered reduced end. This plate is preferably formed of sheet iron or steel or other like material and after the lugs have been passed through the openings the ends of the lugs are riveted over so as to hold the plate firmly in po sition.

It will be observed that in this construction the book which engages the trace link, the shank and the hooks which engage the hame plate are all integral so that they may be cast as a single piece of malleable ma terial, the lugs being cast directly thereon. Moreover the plate is fixed in position so that there are no loose parts as shown in my previous patent above referred to.

There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention;

to the exact form herein shown and described but it is Wished to include all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is A device of the kind described comprising a shank, a hook formed on one end of the shank and having a circuitous passage for the admission of a link, spaced arms projecting from the other end of the shank in a plane parallel to the plane of the hook, hooks on the ends of said arms and arranged at right angles to the first hook, a rabbet extending across the inner faces of said arms at their junction with the shank, lugs projecting from the inner face of the rabbet, a third lug projecting from the inner side of the hook and having a reduced end to provide a shoulder, and a plate having one edge seated in the rabbet and provided With openings through which said lugs extend, the projecting ends of the lugs being riveted over on the inner face of the plate to hold the plate in fixed relation to the shank and hooks.
