To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILLARD F. BEOKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Veld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace Attachments for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to harnesses, and particularly to trace attachments.

It is the object of this invention to provide connecting means between the backband and belly-band of harnesses to which can be attached the trace, for the purpose of assisting in holding the said parts in place, as well as for ornamentation.

The device also tends to bring part of the pull on the trace to the back-band and belly-band.

The device is especially adapted for double harnesses, but can be used for other purposes.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the device as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the device on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the device, showing in dotted lines the parts thereof in disengaged position.

Similar reference characters indicate similar parts in the several figures of the drawing.

Referring specifically to the drawing, the back-band is shown at G, the belly-band at 4, the trace at 5 having the usual buckle holes 7, and the collar is shown at 20. These parts are common on single harnesses.

The device consists of two parts, which are capable of engagement and disengagement with each other to engage or release the trace. The two parts are shown at 12, which is a flat plate adapted to rest against the side of the horse, or other draft animal, having an upper loop 9 and a lower outstanding loop 16, and at 8, which is a plate of ornamental design and is arranged to t on the plate 12. The plate or yoke 8 is spaced from the back-plate 12 by end walls 8a and 8", which form a loop adapted to encircle the trace 5. Extending from the upper end of the yoke 8 is a loop 9, which coincides with the loop 9 to form a loop for the attachment of the back-band 6, as shown. At the lower end of the yoke 8 is a loop 17 for the attachment of the belly-band 4, as shown. The belly-band passes through the loop 16 of the plate 12. A finger 18 projects inwardly from the yoke 8 to enter one of the holes 7 in the trace, to engage the trace with the device. The lower wall 8b of the yoke 8 rests or sets on a shoulder 15 on the lower end of the plate, and a lip 14 projecting from the said wall is adapted to register with a recess 15 in the said shoulder. An opening 13 in the plate 12 adjacent the recess 15 assists in registering the lip 14 with the said recess. When the lip 14 is thus registered or engaged in the recess 15, a lug 10 on the loop 9 is arranged to enter the re cess 11 in the loop 9 and lock the two members together. When the back-band 6 and the belly-band 4 are in proper place on the draft animal, the pull on the back-band holds the loops 9 and 9 together and the two members 8 and 12 are securely locked. Upon releasing either the back-band or the bellyband the loops 9 and 9 can be separated and the lip 14 can be disengaged from the recess 15 to allow the parts to separate or open as shown in Fig. 3. This allows an adjustment of the trace when desired.

The main stress, it will appear, is on the yoke 8 connecting the back-band and the belly-band, and which engages the trace, while an auxiliary stress is exerted on the back-plate 12, it being locked with the yoke 8.

The use of the device is obvious from the foregoing description, and it will be seen, that the objects are accomplished in an elflcient, practical and simple manner. This device can be made in various sizes, materials, and designs.

Having described my invention, I claim as new 1. A trace attachment for harnesses comprising a yoke having loops at the upper and lower ends thereof for the engagement of the back-band and belly-band, a backplate having a recess at the lower end thereof and a loop at the upper end thereof adapted to coincide with the upper loop of the yoke for the engagement of the backband, a lip on the yoke for registering with the said recess, means to lock the said coinciding loops, and a finger projecting from the said yoke for engaging the trace between the said yoke and back-plate.

2. A trace attachment comprising a back plate having an integral upper loop and a lower loop projecting at right angles thereto, combined with a yoke having a lower loop and a loop complementary with the upper loop of the back plate, means for holding and suspending the device by said upper loops, and integral means on the plate and yoke for locking the parts.

3. The combination with a recessed back` plate having an integral upper loop and a lower loop projecting at right angles thereto, of a yoke having a complementary upper loop and a lower loopand formed with an inclosing body portion, said body portion having a projecting linger and a lip,

the latter for engaging the recessed back 15 plate.
