H J. BAXTER.
HORSE HITGHER.
No. 439,463. Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
amwwioz ffemgefacdfiapie 7. aim 4 attom l 113W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY JACOB BAXTER, OF EMERALD, XVISCONSIN.
HORSE-HITCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,463, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed March 28, 1890, Serial No. 345,748. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY J AOOB BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emerald, in the county of St. Croix and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilorse-Hitchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fasteners, and is especially designed to provide means for quickly and securely hitching a horse in any required position, whether to a manger or post.
The improvement consists of a plate pro vided with converging jaws and a wedge shaped block which is adapted to be inserted between the said jaws and clamp the strap, rope, or cord between its sides and the opposing sides of the said jaws, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The improvement further consists of the.
novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a section on the line X X of Fig. 1.
The plate A is provided with the converging jaws B B, which have retaining-lugs a a at their upper edges, which are designed to project overthe top of the wedge-block O and hold the latter to the plate, and also extend over the strap and prevent it slipping from the fastener. These jaws flare at their front ends, so as not to present any sharp angles to injure the strap. The wedge -block O, rounded at its rear end, is provided with the extension D at its upper rear corner or end for a twofold purpose-t0 present a thumbgrip and a shoulder or stop to prevent the strap, rope, or cord from slipping off the said block.
The operation of the fastener is as follows: The rope, strap, or cord is passed around the block and the latter is pressed forward between the jaws B B, thereby clamping the said strap, rope, or cord between the sides of the Wedge and the opposing sides of the jaws. To prevent the wedge-block 0 from getting lost, it is provided with a shank E, which projects through a slot 6 in the plate, being held to said plate by pin F, which passes through the said shank. The plate A is strengthened by plate A, which is projected from the rear edge of the said plate. The plates A and A and the jaws B B are cast in onepiece for cheapness and stability.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the plate having converging jaws, of the wedge-block adapted to be inserted between the said jaws and clamp a rope, strap, or cord between its sides and the opposing sides of the said jaws.
2. The combination, with the plate having converging jaws and having retaining-lugs at the upper edge of the said jaws, of .the wedge-block adapted to be inserted between the jaws, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the plate having converging jaws, of the wedge-block to be in serted between the jaws and having a projectio'n which extends beyond the rear end of the block and above the top edges of the jaws, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of the plate having con verging jaws and retaining-lugs at the upper edges of the said. jaws and the wedge-block having a rear extension, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the plate having converging jaws and having a slot between the jaws, of the wedge-block having a shank which extends through the said slot, and a pin passing through the said shank, substantially as set forth.
6. The herein-described fastener, composed of the plates A and A, which are disposed atright angles to one another, the plate A having converging jaws and retaining-lugs at the upper edges of the said jaws, and having slot- 6, and of the wedge-block having extension D and shank E, the latter extending through slot 6 and held in place by pin F, which passes through the said shank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY JACOB BAXTER.
