To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SOHMID, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVabash, l/Vabash county, and State of Indiana, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Screens and Gostumers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to combined screens and costumers and its object is to provide a folding screen having sections capable of being compactly folded together and rigidly supported from the center in open position, at desired angles, and cooperating with a central post or standard which is adapted to receive and support garments when the screen is either open or closed.

With these objects and others in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings and first to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 1d, inclusively, 1 is a central post which is provided with legs 2 extending in opposite directions and which post is adapted to provide the supporting means for the standards and arms of the sections of the screen and also is adapted to have fixed thereto the hangers which enable the device to be employed as a costumer when the screen is in either folded or extended position. The post consists of two vertical strips spaced apart and joined at top and bottom by cross pieces 1 and 1.

The screen sections are shown as extending in diametrically opposite directions, radially from the central supporting post. Fhe sections are so mounted upon the post, however, that they may be adjusted to different angles from that .shown. In Fig. :2, the screen is shown as unfolded, with one section fully extended and carrying its screen cover or curtain and with the other section partly extended and the cover removed therefrom.

Each section includes vertical standards 3 which are formed of angularly disposed strips so that they are adapted to fit closely against the central post when the screen is to be folded and each of such standards carries supporting legs lextending diagonally to the screen curtain on either side of the center of the central post. When the end standards are moved against the post, a hexagonal central hollow body is formed thereby, as seen in section in Figsp5 and 6, within which the screen arms and cover are folded and confined. Each of the end standards and the central post are adapted to be connected adjacent their upper ends by means of hinged arms 5 and 6.

The outer end of the arm 5 is pivoted by a horizontal pivot 7 to one end of a horizontal sleeve or swivel member 8 which extends through an arm 9 of a bracket 10 which bracket is engaged by a screw 11 which projects upwardly into the cross member 1.

A horizontal swinging hook 12 is mounted on the screw 11 and its hooked end is adapted to engage a pin 12 on the bracket 10 whereby the bracket is adapted to be held fixed relatively to the post and whereby upon loosening the hook from the pin, the bracket may be swung angularly with respect to the post on the screw as a pivot to permit the angle of the screen section to the post to be altered.

The construction shown in Figs. 1 to 14: inclusive has two screen sections and'consequentl'y two arms 5 and a swivel member bracket, screw and hook is provided for the other arm 6 similarly to such arrangement above described for the first arm.

The inner ends of the arms 5 and 6 are connected by a horizontal pivot 18 and, as shown in Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive, the arm 5 is provided with a notch 13 with which is adapted to engage a struck out lug 1 L on the arm 6, whereby the two arms may be locked together in horizontal position when the screen section is extended.

The outer end of the arm 6 is pivoted by a horizontal pivot 15 on a swivel member '16 which projects through an angled bracket 17, fixed on the inner side of the end standa'rd3,

By turning the arms 5 and 6 through a half circle on their respective swivels, the pivot 13 is carried into vertical position and thereby the arms prevented from collapsing when the screen sections are in extended position.

Connecting the lower portions of each end standard and the central post are hinged arms 18 and 19 pivoted together at their inner ends at 20 and connected respectively to said standard and post at their outer ends by means of the respective brackets 21 and 22. The bracket 22 has a horizontal portion which "is adjustably fixed upon the lower cross member 1 of the central post.

Each standard is provided near its upper end with a dowel pin 23 adapted to enter a suitable aperture in the central post. Each standard is also provided with a latch hook 24: adapted to engage a spring pressed latch 25 mounted on the central post. A rotatable latch releasing member 26 is fixed upon a shaft 27 projecting through the central post and having wings adapted to bear against the latch members to force them apart and release them from the fixed hooks on the standards. This shaft extends through and is fixed to a garment supporting hook 28, mounted on and projecting from the post. A similar garment hook 29 is mounted opposite the hook 28. On the post abovethe hooks 28 and 29 are fixed other garment hangers or hooks 30, 31, 32 and 33 on which garments are adapted to be hung, thereby enabling the device to be used as a costumer. In the particular arrangement herein shown the lower hangers or hooks also serve as handles whereby the latch may be manipulated to unlock the same so that the end standards may be released to permit the screen sections to be extended.

The curtain 34: of each screen section is adapted to be supported on the hinged arms by means of rings 35. A vertical set rod 36 at the end of each screen section is looped over the upper and lower folding arms 6 and 21 and the outer edges of the curtain are suitably connected thereto.

In Figs. 15 to 20 inclusive, a modification is shown in which the vertical end standards of the screens are dispensed with and merely one hinged arm for each upper and lower border of each screen section provided, which arms are adapted to fold from pivots adjacent the upper and lower ends of the central post down against the post, with the free ends of said arms meeting substantially at the center line of the post. Three screen sections are shown in this arrangement.

In this construction, 36 is the central post. Extending from one side of said post at the upper and lower ends thereof are arms 37 and 38 which are pivoted at 39 and 40 respectively by horizontal pins to said posts and which arms are adapted to swing through a vertical plane. The upper arms are adapted to be supported by hinged brace arms 41 and 42 which are pivoted together at their inner ends and at their outer ends are respectively pivoted to the central post and to the swinging arms. The lower arm 38 and the central post are similarly connected by hinged brace arms a3 and 44. The central post in this modification is provided with fixed garment hangers i8 and with four legs 19.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. 2. In an article of the class described,

3. In a device of the class described, a central post, circumferentially adjustable brackets mounted thereon at top and hot tom, radial arms pivoted to said brackets, swiveling connections between the upper brackets and arm permitting the rotation of the latter, outer upper and lower arms pivoted to said first arms, a vertical standard to which said outer arms are pivoted, a swiveling connection between the outer upper arm and the upper end of said standard and a curtain hung 011 said arms.

4. In a device of the class described, a central post, folding screen sections each including a vertical end standard, folding arms pivotally connecting said post and standard, cooperating latching means mounted on said post and standard, a garment hanger mounted on one of said posts and operatively connected with said latch to re lease the same.
