Description

CHARLES C. SCHMITT AND RUDOLPH WODRIOH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.`
Leners Patent No. 82,755, dated october 6,1868.
IMPBOVED FOLDING CHAIR.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN: 4
".Be it-known that we, CHARLES C. SCHMITT and RUDOLPH WoDnroH, of the city, county, and State ofNew York, have invented a new and improved Folding Chair; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the ardt-to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure l'represents a. side elevation of our improved folding chair, Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same. VFigure 3 is a side view, partly in section, of the same when folded together.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. The object of this invention is to construct a chair of ordinary or suitable form', in such manner that it can be'readily folded together to occupy but little room.
This is important not only for transporting chairs, but also for crowded rooms, in which chairs, Wheninot i used, can be easily folded into a small compass.,
The invention consists in pivoting the legs of the chair to the seat of the same, and in connecting their respective braces in such manner that the desired result is obtained, and
' firm and reliable.
made and operating shbstantially as herein shown and described` A, in the drawing, represents the seat of .our improved chair'. This seat is made of wood, cane, or upholstored or otherwise constructed and made in any suitable manner.
B B are the front legs ofthe chair. They are connected with each other by means of rods or braces a 6, as shown.
The upper part of the seat rests upon 'the upper brace a, and is connected with the same by means of bands or staples, c c, that are fastened with their ends to the under side of the sea-t, and surround the bar a, as shown, or by any other suitable hinge. The front legs are thus pivoted to the seat.
The rear legs are also connected by means of rods or braces ol e, the upper one, d, of Whiclfserves also to support the seat with which it is connected, by means of bands or staples,f, that are similar to c, as shown in igs..1 and 3. l f
The rear legs, G C, may extend upward, to form, in conjunction with connecting-barsg g, the back, D, of the chair, as shown. V
Thearear end of the seat fits, when the chair is expanded, under arod, h, which connects the legs C, andthe seat is thereby prevented fromihnving its front part lowered.
It will be'seen that by this arrangement the sent can always be swung back around the pivot d, carrying then the front legs up with it. i l
Togmake the folding process convenient, and to keep the chair firm when expanded, the lower bars, b and e, are connected with each other by a. rod or rods, band or bands z', bent with its or their ends loosely around the said bars 6 e, as is clearly shown in figs. 1 and 3, and so as to not interfere wit-l1 the swinging motionof the seat. The band 2' being always parallel with the seat, will cause the front legs to also remain parallel, or nearly so, with the rear legs, while folding, as shown.
By the simple application of this band i and rod t, the chair is made'rm and steady and strong.
The front legs, B B, may also be extended above the seat to form .the front supports of the arm-rests E E. Thesev arm-rests are, by meansof hinges, j, fastened to the upper end of the legs B, while they are in rear slotted, as in figs. 1 and 3. I
Pins 1c project from the rear legs C through these slots, and thereby support the rear ends ofthe arm-rests, the slotsallowing them the requisite play while folding.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
that the chair, when in use, is entirely The folding chair, consisting ofthe combination of the seat A, which is pivoted or hinged to the legs B C, l
with the rods a b d e, bands or staples c f, rod L, slotted arms E, hinged to the legs B, pins k, and band z', all
CHARLES SCHMITT. RUDOLPH WODRICH.
