UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. SOHURGER, JR., AND JOHN TAKAOS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
. Application filed July 10. 1907. Serial No. 383,014.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. SCHURGER, Jr., and J OHN TAKAOS, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Stool and Music-Stand, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined stool and music stand, and has for its object to provide a collapsible or folding stand particularly adapted for the use of musicians, the construction being such that the stand and stool can be folded into small compass and readily transported and set up wherever it may be necessary to use the same.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, set up. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the seat removed from its standard, and folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the stool. Fig. 1 is a detail in elevation of the'seat support, folded. Fig. 5 is a detail in section and elevation of the music stand.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the lower tube of the stool standard and 7 the upper tube thereof. These arts telescope, and the latter is provided with a rack 8 which is engaged by a spring catch 9 fixed to a collar 10 at the top of the tube 6, to .hold the standard in adjusted or elevated position. The supporting legs 11 are hinged to a sliding collar 12 on the lower tube 6, and also connected to the tube by hinged braces 13. The collar may be slid up and down to spread the legs or to bring them to parallelism With the standard. l/Vhen spread, they are held by a spring catch 14 carried by the collar and engaging in a hole in the tube.
At its upper end the standard 7 has a head 15 to which is hinged, as at 16, two diametrically opposite sets of arms 17 and 18. The former have sockets 19 at the ends to receive pins 20 depending from connecting or hinged ieces 21 which connect the semi-circular or ow frames 22 of the seat. The bows are pivoted or hin ed to the pieces 21 so that they may be f0 ded over against each other, as indicated in Fig. 2. A flexible seat bottom 23 is fastened to the bows. The seat is shown as round, but may be square if desired. The arms 18 are flattened at the ends as indicated at 24, to fit in sockets 25 formed on the inner side of the bows, and said ends have notches 26 to receive spring catches27 which hold the parts together. The seat is thus supported at four points. It may be readily detached by disengaging the catches 27 and pulling the pins 20 out of the sockets 19, and then foldedto small space as shown in Fig. 2. And the arms of the standard can then be folded together as shown in Fig. 4.
The music rack 28 is supported by an ex tensible standard 29 formed of rods and a tube slidable in and upon each other, the rod having a socket 30 at the top to engage the middle piece of the rack and also to permit the same to be removed and folded when desired. The outer tube of the standard 29 is jointed by set screw 31 to the end of a rod 32 which is jointed by a set screw 33 to a rod 34 which in turn is jointed by a set screw 35 to a rod 36 which has an end 37 turned down to fit in the socket 38 on the said collar 10, where it is fixed by set screw 39. The joints at the set screws allow the music stand to be swung or turned into any desired position, to allow the seat to be occupied and to regulate the distance and height of the music rack, to suit the performer. l
The music stand may be collapsed by.removing and folding the rack, telescoping the standard 29, then folding the same, together with the rods 32, 3 1 and 36, to parallelism. The seat standard is capable of being collapsed or telescoped in the manner heretofore described, and all the parts can then be laid together and conveniently carried in the hand or in a bag provided for the purpose. The seat may be used without the music stand, as a portable or camp stool.
I claim:
1. A folding stool comprising a standard, two sets of radial arms hinged to the top thereof, one set having sockets in their outer. ends, and a folding seat having two bows with connecting hinge pieces at their ends, said pieces having depending pins adapted to fit in said sockets, and the other set of arms having means at their outer ends to attach the same to the bows.
2. A folding stool comprising a standard, In testimony whereof we do aflix our sigtwo pairs of radial arms hinged to the top natures, in presence of two witnesses. thereof, and a foldlng seat having two bows JOHN J SGHURGER, JR
hinged together at their ends, said bows having supporting connections to one pair of arms at the ends of the bows, and to the Vitnesses: other pair of arms at the intermediate parts JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, of the bows. NETTIE J QSoHAUM.
