Description
A. SMITH & w. FORQUER.
MUZZLE FOR HORSES. APPLICATION FILED MAY 3. I916.
Patented Feb. 13, 1917.
ARCHIE SMITH AND "WILEY 'FORQUER, OF JUANITA, NORTH DAKOTA. v
MUZZLE FOR HOREiES.
Application filed May S, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARCHIE SMITH and lVlLnr Fon Unn, citizens of the United States, residing at Juanita, in the county of Foster, State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Muzzle for Horses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved nose and mouth muzzle for horses and other like animals, and an object of the invention is to provide an improved muzzle of this kind constructed of one piece of suitable textile fabric, for instance, heavy canvas or the like, which is so shaped and stitched together, as to form a muzzle to fit on the nose portion and the under part of the head near the neck, in order to keep the flies and the like from the nose of the animal. A guard or muzzle of this kind also prevents the animal from destroying vines, flowers and the like. I
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the improved muzzle as applied to a horses head, and constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the muzzle.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4c is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the one piece of textile fabric or heavy canvas from which the muzzle is constructed.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the single piece of textile fabric or the like, so shaped, and cut to provide the parts 2., 3 and 4t adjacent the side edge portions of said piece of fabric, so that when the fabric is folded or shaped, and the parts 2, 3 and 4E stitched together as shown at 6, 7 and 8, a muzzle or guard substantially of the general shape shown in Fig. 1 is con- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

structed, in order to fit the nose portion of the head, and the under part of the head adjacent the neck. The parts 2, 3 and at, when overlapped constitute reinforcing means for the opposite sides of the muzzle. Where the bit rings protrude through, there are bound slits or openings 9, tl'irough which the opposite ends of bit and the bit rings extend. The muzzle is provided with reinforced or bound openings 10, which, when the muzzle is on the head of the animal as shown in 1, register with the nasal passages thereby permitting the animal to easily breathe. That portion of the muzzle which arches the bridge of the nose is turned or folded upon itself, to form a pocket 11 for the reception of a leather reinforcing strap 12, the opposite end portions of which are folded under and riveted by means of rivets 13 to said folded part and through said strap, thereby forming loops 14, through which the side straps 15 of a bridle pass, thereby assisting in holding the muz zle on the head of the animal. The portion 16 of the muzzle or guard has its edge portion folded upon itself as shown at 17 and stitched, thereby reinforcing that portion of the muzzle which fits under the head adjacent the neck of the animal. The opposite ends of the folded portion 17 have straps 19 riveted therein, and which straps are provided with suitable buckles 20 to receive the short straps 91 of the side straps of the bridle, thereby holding the portion 16 of the muzzle in position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A muzzle constructed from a single piece of textile fabric and having integral overlapping parts, and a bag shaped portion shaped to conform with and fit the nose and mouth portion of the head of the animal, said animal adjacent the neck, and the corners of names to this specification in the presence of said extension having loops for the receptwo subscribing Witnesses.
tion of the side straps of the bridle, said bag ARCHIE SMITH. shaped portion of the muzzle being provided WILEY FORQUER. with openings to register With the nasal pas- Witnesses: sages of the animal. J. H. KIRWAN,
In testimony whereof We have signed our TRANT M. STEVENSON.
