To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Jnssn D. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton, in the county of Elizabeth City and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in harness attachments and more particularly to stays adapted to be attached to breast collars or breechings whereby the same will be firmly held in proper position.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a stay of considerable length, formed of some flexible material, and adapted to be stitched to the harness along the entire length of its lower edge.

Another object of the invention is to provide a stay of this type having improved reinforcing means which are adapted to be attached to a buckle.

The invention also aims to generally improve stays of this type to render theinmore eiiicient, strong, and commercially desirable.

With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists incertain novel features of construction, combi nation and arrangement of parts as I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a harness stay constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the reinforcing and attaching strap used upon my improved stay, the box loop being shown in cross section; Fig. 3 is a side elevationof the strap, the box loop and-a portion of the stay being shown in cross section. 4

Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals 1 designates, generally, my improved stay which is preferably formed from a single layer of leather or similar ma terial. The upper edge 2 of the stay is curved, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and if desired, the line of ornamental stitching 3 may be run around the edges of the stay.-

A reinforcing and connecting strap 6 extends transversely across the central portion of the stay 1, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and may be secured in position by the rows of stitching 7 which terminate short of the slot 4. he strap 6 extends upwardly from the upper edge 2 of the stay 1, passes through a buckle 8 carried by another portion of the harness, thence downwardly as at 9, through the slot 4, and then upwardly as shown at 10, within the loop formed in the strap 6. The upper portions of the s rap 6 pass through the box loop 11 and are thereby held tightly against one another. The stay is attached to the breeching or breast collar of a set of harness by any suitable means, such as a row of stitching extending a full length of the lower edge 12.

it will be seen from the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, that my improved sta, because of its great length, and the means whereby it is fastened to a breast collar or breeching, will hold the same secured and prevent undue moti'on thereof. Thestrap 6 greatlyreinforces the central portion of the stay 1, where the greatest strain is encountered, and because of the novel manner in which it is arranged, being carried upwardly through the buckle 8, thence downwardly through the slot 1 and again upwardly, prevents an undue strain being placed upon that portion of the stay which has been weakened by the slot 4.

Having thus described this invention, whatis claimed is In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated body portion, formed centrally of its ends and adjacent its upper edge with a longitudinal strap receiving slot, said body portion being adapted for engagement along its lower longitudinal edge to a breeching strap, of a strap extending transversely of said body portion and secured thereto, said strap passing upwardly through the slot to the opposite side of the body, thence upwardly beyondthe top edge of thebody and provided atits central portion with a buckle, the end said strap extending downwardly from portion so that the extrerne end of the strap p said buckle and thence up through the slot will beheld by friction against accidental and the extreme end of said strap being redisplacement.
