SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,993, dated January 20, 1891.

Be it known that I, LOUIS E. SHIPPY, of Sandy Hill, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Halter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in halters for animals, and has for its objects to provide a simple, strong, convenient, andinexpensive halter, the parts of which are adjustable and afford means to change the size of the halter, so as to fit it to the heads of different horses or other draft-animals.

To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents the improved halter secured upon the head of the horse, the leading-strap being shown broken. Fig. 2 is a front view of the halter, the leading-strap of the same being broken. Fig. 3 is a view ofa portion of the improved halter, showing the side portion concealed in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4is an enlarged view of a portion of the halter, showing an important novel feature of the device.

The cheek-straps A A and nose-strap B of the halter are made of a single piece of leather or other suitable material in the form of a long strip having proper width and thickness. Said strip is formed into the principal parts of the halter named by its sliding engagement with two similar oheelbguards O C.

' The guards O O are preferably produced from stout pieces of leather cut into circular form, each of which has two keeper-slits a I) cut through it at a proper distance from the edge and nearly at right angles.

The elongated strip, which forms the parts A, A, and B, is connected with the cheekguard in the following manner. One end of the strip is inserted through the slit a in said cheek-guard, as shown in Fig. 4:- A ring D is then strungupon the strip,and its end that was passed through the ring is inserted in the slit b, the material of the strip being folded, as at c, and the ring located in the fold, as represented.

The folding of the strip of material, as just described, provides a cheek-strap A, which is made of sufficient length to extend to a median line on the head of the animal on which the halter is to be placed, and a buckle cl is secured to this end of the cheek-strap named.

On the portion of the strip of material which has been drawn through the keeper-slit b and extended nearly at a right angle to the edge of the cheek-strap A the other cheek-guard C is placed by first inserting the end of said material through the slit bin the cheek-guard mentioned. The material is now folded, as shown at c in Fig. 3, so as to form a bight, in which the ring D is located by stringing it upon the strip, which latter is then passed through the slit (1, and is extended upwardly to engage the buckle (Z, that is on the other cheek-strap.

The cheek-strap A has a series of perforations f formed in it at equal distances apart to permit the pair of cheek-straps to be shortened, and as the cheek-guards C C are separated a proper distance the nose-strap B is thus produced, which may also be altered in length by the sliding movement of the cheekguards.

A throat-latch strap E is provided, which is of such a proportionate length as will enable it to encircle the throat of a large horse and have a buckled engagement thereon, as shown. in Fig. 1.

The brow-band F is of such a proportionate length that its end portions will loosely engage the adjacent cheek-straps A A and the throat'latch strap E, said portions being folded and stitched, so as to produce two elongated loops 9 g on each end of the head-band, through which the cheek-straps and throatlatch strap are adapted to slide. I

Through the rings D D a curb-strap G is inserted, which strap is provided with a buckle i, secured on one end, so that the folding of the strap and an engagement of the other end with the buckle will adapt the curbstrap by its adjustment to draw the nosestrap B and cheek-straps A A closely in con tact with the head of the animal near the muzzle.

The position of the head-band F and its loose connection with the cheek-straps A A and throat-latch strap E serve to retain the halter in place While a free adjustment of parts is afforded, the change in size of the halter being effected by the alteration of the buckled connection between the ends of the cheek-straps A A, the throat-latch strap E at its ends, and the ends of the curb-strap G.

The provision of the cheek-guards O O is an essential feature of the invention, as these pieces prevent the rings D D from having a chafing action upon the checks of the animal, and also furnish keepers to retain the strap forming the cheek-straps and nose-strap in a folded condition, susceptible of longitudinal adjustment to change the size of the halter, as has been explained.
