MAT-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE'H. TAYLOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The device which is the subject-matter of the present application for patent is designed more particularly for use in connection with automobiles for holding a foot mat on the running board or on the floor of the car, and the invention has for its object to provide a holder which is simple and cheap, and which will securely hold the mat and prevent the same from slipping when in use. The holder is also designed to shed water, and the mat can be readily applied or removed.

With the objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in

p the form of a shallow tray formed of sheet metal or any other suitable material, and having a bottom 6 and side walls 7, and shaped to conform to the shape of the mat, the same being rectangular. The shape and dimension of the holder may be varied according to the shape and size of the mat. The side walls of the holder slope inward and at the top they are bent laterally to form an inturned retaining flange 8 for the mat. The sloping side walls and the top flanges overhang the mat and prevent the same from slipping upward out of the holder. The side walls are cut away at the corners to produce openings 9, these being for the purpose of allowing any Water en- Specification of letters Patent.

The corner openings also facilitate the removal of the mat, as a finger or a rod may be inserted to pry out the mat. Thus the mat may be easily removed when washing the car, so that it will-not get wet.

The holder is formed out of a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, shown in Fig. 3, having corner cuts to form the openings 9, and bent upward along the dotted lines 10 to form the side walls, with inward bends along the dotted lines 11 to form the retaining flanges 8. Thus, it will be seen that the holder can be easily and cheaply produced.

If the mat is to be placed on the running board of the car, the holder will be bolted, clamped, or otherwise fastened thereto, to prevent loss, and'for holding a mat onthe floor of the car, the holder may be provided with small brads 12 on the bottom to prevent it from slipping when in use. Holders for large mats would not need any brads as the weight of the mat would keep the holder from slipping around.

Fig. 4 illustrates a convenient means for attaching the holder to the running-board 13 of the car, the attaching means comprising a resilient clamp 14 affixed to the holder,

, and having bends 15 at its ends arranged to pass around and beneath the running board, the portion of the bends which are below the running board carrying wing nuts 16 adjustable to engage the under side of the running board to hold the clamping member in place. By this means the holder can be readily attached to and removed from the running board, and it is securely held in place therein without making holes therein for bolts, screws, or rivets. The clamping member may be attached to the holder by being passed through apertures in opposite walls thereof and extended along the bottom of the holder on the inside thereof, being suitably made fast to said holder bottom. Two of these clamping members will be employed, one for each end of the holder.

The holder may also be advantageously used for holding mats in halls, public places, etc., to keep the mats in place and prevent them from being kicked around. The holder also serves to retain the shape of the mat.
