Description

n. c-. WARFEL. DOOR SCREEN APPLICATION menus. 6. I915.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Witnesses Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT onrron.
HENRY C. WARFEL, OF PHILIPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-SCREEN.
Application filed February 6, 1915. Serial No. 6,527.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. VVARFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philipsburg, in the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Door-Screen, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to screens, and relates more particularly to a door screen adapted to be applied to a door and its casing or frame, for holding the door open for purpose of ventilation, and which will at the same time prevent intrusion.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a door screen having novel means for assembling it with the door and doorcasing, whereby the door will be held open, and in order that the screen will prevent a maliciously incllned person from entering the room, since the present screen.
serves as a barrier and cannot be detached from the outside.
It is also within the scope of the invention to'provide a door screen of the nature indicated, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, which is ad just-able to hold the door open at various angles, which may be readily applied to the door and door casing, and which is convenient, practical and efficient in use.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise-embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the present device as applied to the opened door and door casing. Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of the parts depicted in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental view illustrating the means carried by the screen for attaching it to the door. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, there is designated a door casing or frame 1, to which the door 2 is hinged, the present screen being designated generally by the numeral 3.
The screen 3 embodies a pair of overlapping sections 4 and 5, each of which is pro Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
the sections, and slidably engaging the up- {II per and lower ends of the opposite frames or sectlons. Thus, the screen 3 may be adusted to various widths.
In order to apply the screen 3 to the door 7 casing 1, that edge of the frame or section 4 remote from the frame 5, is provided with eye screws or bearings 8, which are engageable over hooks 9 secured to the door casing at that side thereof adjacent which the free edge of the door is normally disposed. A hook 10 is connected loosely to the inner side of that upright member-or stile of the frame 4 remote from the frame 5, and the bill or free end of the hook 10 is engageable through an eye screw 11 engaged to the cars ing 1 between the hooks 9. The'hook 10 projects downwardly or depends from its pivot, in order that when the bill or free end of the hook 10 is engaged with the eye screw or keeper 11, the hook 10 will project downwardly and thereby hold the bearings 8 upon the hooks or pivots 9 for preventing the frame or section 4 from being lifted off of the hooks or pivots 9.
The screen also carries means for attaching it to the door 2, and to this end a hook 12 is connected loosely to that upright memher or stile of the frame 5 remote from the frame 4, and the bill or free end of the hook 12 is engageable over and around the shank 13 of the inner knob 14 of the door when holding the door open for purpose of ven tilation, and to exclude the intrudersfrom the room. Thus, the bearings 8 maybe readily dropped onto the hooks or pivots 9, and the hook 10 may then be engaged to the keeper 11. Then, by swinging the the outside, since the retaining hooks and 12 are protected from outside tampering, and cannot be disengaged, on the outside, from the door and screen. The screen 3 is extensible, in order that door 2 may be swung at various angles with respect to the door casing, and in order that the pres ent screen may be applied to various door structures. When it is desired to close the door, the hooks '10 and 12 may be readily disengaged from the door casing and door, respectively, and the screen 3 may then be lifted off of the pivots 9, it being noted that the frames or sections of the screen may be slid together when the screen is not in use, for enabling the screen to be compactly stored or conveyed.
Instead of detaching the screen from the door easing when the screen is detached from the door, it may be swung back against the wall.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a door casing and door hinged thereto, of a screen comprising slidably connected sections, one section being hinged to the door casing adjacent the free edge of the door so that the screen can be swung toward and away from the door, the other section being adapted to swing against the free edge of the door at different positions thereof when the door is opened, and means for securing the last mentioned section to the door to prevent the unwarranted detachment of the screen from the outside.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a door casing and door hinged thereto, of a screen compris- .ing slidably connected sections, bearings attached to the casing at the free edge of the door, one of said sections having hooks engaging said bearings to hinge the screen to the casing so that the screen can be swung toward and away from the door, the other section being adapted to swing against the free edge of the door when the door at different positions thereof is opened, means for securing the first mentioned section and door casing together to prevent the detachment of the screen from the casing by an unwarranted person on the outside, and means for securing the second mentioned section to the door to prevent the detachment of the screen from the door by an unwarranted person on the outside.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
