SHUTTER ATTACHMENT FUR DOORS.
Application led March 13, 1922. Serial No. 543,374.
To all 'zo/10m 'it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, LYDIA MARIAN OI-IAR- Row, a. citizen of Ythe United States, and a resident I' Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State vof Pennsylvania.,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter Attachments for Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention'relates to improvements in a vcnti-lating attachment for doors, and Yit consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinV described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described by means of which a door may be held `partially opened to provide ventilation which prevents persons from entering the room from the outside.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be folded and secured clear of the door when not in use. n
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, easy to operate and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification. and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention i5 illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Fig. 1 is a view of an embodiment of my invention with a Ventilating attachment in an inoperative position,
F ig. 2 is a view of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the ventilating attachment in use,
Fig. 3 is a pla-n view of the Ventilating attachment to show the details of construction,
In carrying out my invention, I make use of three sheet metal ventilating shutters 1, 2 and 3. which are hingedly connected to one another by means of integral hinge fastenings 4 and 5.
The ventilating shutters are each pro-vided with louvers 6, which are arranged to open upwardly so that one cannot see through the shutters from either side. The shutter 1 is constructed so that it is narrower than the shutters 2 and 3 for the purpose hereinafter described'.
F our hingedly mounted supporting plates 'T are disposed at the outer edge of the shutter 3 and are secured by means of wood f screws 9 to the frame 10 of the door l11. Each of the plates 7 is provided withl an outwardly extending eye 12. The eyes 12 are 'in exact registration with elongated -openings 13 in the shutters 1, 2 and 3 so that when the shuttersl 1, 2 and 3 arefyfolded against the plates .7, the eyes-12 `will 'project through the openings 13. A relatively narrow metal plate 14 is hingedly mounted l at 15 to the outer edge'ot the shutter 1 and is also provided with openings 13 in registration with the eyes k12. 'Y
Each of the plates 7l is provided Vwith a bolt 16 loosely attached to the plate g by means'of the chain 17.r The chain 17 is Voi' suilicient length to permit the bolt `16to be passed through the eyes 12 after the shutters and the plate 14 are folded thereagainst, thus locking the shutters and the plate 14 in `an inoperative position adjacent the door frame 10.
Means for removably securing the plate 14 to the edge of the door when open, is provided in a plurality of small metal buttons 18 secured to the edge of the door and arranged for registration with the openings 13 in the plate 14.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. My invention is particularly well suited for use in hotels andsometimes where one desires a maximum ventilation in the sleeping room, but where the opening of the door for this purpose may be inconvenient. In using my device, it would be merely necessary to release the bolt 16 from the eyes 12 when the device is in an inoperative position and to unfold the shutters. The plate 14 is then secured to the edge of the portion by passing the buttons 18 through the openings 1,3
and turning the huttons'so that they will prevent the removing of the plate 14 by pressure thereagainst, as from the outside. The passage of air to or from the room is hereupon established, Vsince the air may pass through the louvers 6 of the shutters and .also through the opening 19 between the iframe 10 and the door 11 at the top thereof.
The door 11 may be moved toward and away from the frame 10 to vary the opening therebetween without removing the plate Fi, e. g
14 from the edge of the door. TWhen a ventilating attaohnienttlius described is not in use, the shu'ttersgl, 2 and aretfolfdedbaelr uponthe plates 7 and the plate le is folder against the shutter l so that the eyes I2 p'i'otrude through -t'le 'openings 1S jot'theinter-z posed shutters and plate and the bolts 16 are passed through the eyes 'l2 v:to lookv the-iattachment in its inoperative position.
I claim:
l. The combination with a 'hingedly inounted door and a traine for said door, of a tolda'ble Ventilating 'shutter comprising foldable sections lh'in'gc'adly supported at one edge on said frame, said shutterV having a plurality of plates hingedly mounted to -one another 'and provided with ventila-ting openings therethrough, one of said plates being hingedly supported at one edge on said trarne, and mea-ns for removably securing laf/asie the' opposite edge of said shutter to said door. i
The lconahination `with a hingedly mounted door and a frame for said door, of a foldalole Ventilating shutterhingedly supported at 'one edge onsafidvfraina a rela tively narrowV plate hingedly connected to f the'oi'iterinost seotion .of said shutter, said f plate havinga plurality ot openings therethrough, and apl'urality of fastening buttons secured to said door, said k-biittons being arranged to engage the :openings in'said .plate to lock said plate to said door. p
4. The combination with a hingedly mounted door and a traine for said door, ol a foldable Ventilating shutter hin-gedly supported at one edge fon said traine, a relatively narrow plate hingedly oonnectedfto the outermost section of said shut-ter, -sa-id lplate havinga plurality1 of openings there-Y:
through, and a lplurality of asteninghut- `tons secured to said door, said buttons being arranged to Lengagev the openings in said plate to lock said plate to said' door, and means for removably locking said shutter and vplate 'against said frame when folded and in an inoperative position.
