especially guy ropes, wires or rods for poles upon streets or highways; or at least to minimize the damage to the person or object colliding with such objects.
My invention consists in the combination of parts and in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will herein be more fully-described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a general perspective view of a pole and its guy-wire orrope secured to an anchor-rod which does not project far out of the ground, the guy wire beingprovided with a guard constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lower part of the guywire attached to an anchor-rod that projects a considerable distance out of the ground, and the guard embodying my invention being mounted partly on the guywire and partly onthe anchor-rod; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig, 1 or Fig. 2, enlarged; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of part of the guard and guywire or rope and the attachingmeans; and Figs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, longitudinal sections on lines-corresponding to the line 56 of Fig. 2, showing the upper and lower.

As I prefer to construct my invention, the guard comprises a main body part '1 of arc-shaped cross section. As here shown the arc of the cross section issubstantially a semi-circle; and for usual purposes the"- diameter is about three inches and the length about seven feet. The material is preferably steel about one-eighth inch thick. Such a piece may be conveniently made by dividing a steel tube or pipe longitudinally. Boiler tubes which have become unfit for further service in boilers are suitable for this. purpose. The edges 2 are referably rounded as shown in Fig, 3. Com ined with this body 1 are U-bolts 3 having their legs 4 passed through holes 5.in the body 1 from the exterior to the interior of the arc-shaped cross section, so that the transverse part 6 of the U-bolt 3 lies against the convex exterior of the body 1. Inside the body, a block 7 is fitted between the legs 4 of the 'U-bolt 3- against the concave interior of the,
body. This block 7 is considerably shorter than thelegs 4, and its end away from where it bears against the body 1, it has a notch 8 which receives the guy 9. A bar 10 with a notch 11reCeiving-the other side of the guy 9 .has openings 12 which fit-over the outer ends of the legs 4', and theseouter ends are threaded and receive nuts 13 which thus clamp the guy 9 between the elements 7 and 10 and also clamp the body 1 to the element- 7 bydrawing the transverse part 6' against the outside of the body. The element 7 is preferably rounded on its end next to the body 1 so as to bearsolidly thereagainst, and also preferably has-grooves 14 in its sides to fit around the adjacent sidesof the legs'4 and keep the blocks'7 from slipping lengthwise o the device out. of the U-bolt. -The notches 8 and. 11 prevent transverse slippage of the device on the Two of the mountings made u asabove described are provided at a su cient distance apart along the guard. In practice I locate the mountings about eighteen inches from the respective ends of the body 1'. This allows the lower mounting to be fixed on the guy-wire or cableabove the attach-' ment 15 to the anchor-rod 16 as seen in Fig.
1, and yet allows the lower part oi the guard to be sufficiently close to the ground to. guard against damaging collision with the.
anchor-rodland the adjacent parts of the 9. g 'i Vhere the anchor+rod extends a considerable distance out of. the ground, as the anchor-rod '16 of Fig.- 2, .the lower mount ing is fixed around the anchor-rod as indicated in Fig. 6. To provide for this contingency, I prefer to make the U-bolt 3 of the lower mounting with lc sufliciently longer than the legs 4 o .the uppber mounting to receive, the anchor-rod 16 tween the block 7 and the bar 10., in thesame manner that the guy 9 would be received, as above described.
As shown, the U-bolts extend through the body in about the middle thereof, so that about equal parts of the body will be disposed on each side of the guy 9 or rod 16 or 16; and when clamped to these parts, it is disposed before the uppermost or outermost side of the guy and rod, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, where, as seen in Fig. 1, the guard is located on the side of the guy 9 away from the post 17, to the upper part of which the upper end of the guy 9 is attached for reinforcing the pole.
The guard is preferably given a very light color by painting on all sides; because one of the important functions of the device is not only to minimize the damage of collision by afiording a more widely extended surface than that of the guy or rod, but to aliord a signal or marker for the guy or rod that will be readily seen in darkness, thereby reducing the chance of collision with the guy or rod,
While my invention performs the above functions, its construction is such that there is no place for the lodgment of any considerable amount of dirt or moisture -or ice around the guy or rod; so that while guarding against accidents to persons, animals or other moving objects which might collide with the guy or rod,the latter is subjected to practically no more deteriorating conditions than when it is left uncovered. This advantage is due not only to giving the body of the guard a cross section less than that of a complete circle or other completely inclosing figure, and by limiting the longitudinal extent of the mountings as well as 10- cating them far from each other and causing them to hold the body of the guard an ample distance away from the guy or rod on all sides; but to the manner of mounting the guard on the guy or rod, or both, by which its lower end is kept an ample distance from the ground, yet not so far from the ground as to allow the guy or rod to be exposed to contact b moving objects in a way that would be in urious to these objects. Any device that completely surrounds the guy or rod, or lies too close thereto, or which meetsthe ground, will cause a collection of moisture which will be held around the guy or rod, resulting in corrosion of the guy or rod, especially the former, so as to seriously impair its strength.
The jaws or edges of the notches 8 and 11 are finished smoothly enough that they will not damage the wire or cable; and, holding the body of the guard far away from the wire or cable at all times, there is no damage to the wire or cable by abrasion with ends of the guard. The edges 2 of the guard being properly rounded, a person or animal colliding with the inner side of the guard will not be cut or otherwise seriously injured;
. and the guard will be high enough so that there will be no contact, under ordinary conditions, with the upper endor' corners of the guard.
The block 7 is preferably made to fit tightly between the legs at of the U-bolt 3, so that the body 1 may have this U-bolt 3 and this block 7 assembled on it ready to re ceive the bar 10 and nuts 18 after the guy or rod has been received in the notches 8 and 11, between the block 7 and bar 10, as before described.
The device is very readily installed; especially when furnished as just described.v
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A guard for an object of the character described, comprising an elongated body to lie along the object with longitudinal parts flanking the object, and means clamping said body on the object and spacing said body away from the object throughoutthe extent of the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby collection of dirt, moisture, or ice around the object is minimized.
2. A guard for an object of the character described, comprising an elongated body of open cross sect on to lie along the object with longitudinal edges flanking the object, and means clamping said body on the ob ject and spacing said body awa from the object throughout the extent 0 the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby collection of dirt, moisture, or ice around the ob-v ject is minimized.
3. A guard for an object of the character described, comprising an elongated body of thin arc-shaped cross section to lie along the object with longitudinal edges flanking the object, and means clamping said bod on the object and spacing said body away rom the object throughout the extent of the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby col lection of dirt, moisture, or'ice around the object is minimized.
4. A guard for an object of the character described, comprising an elongated body of thin open cross section to lie along the ob ject with rounded longitudinal edges flanking the object, and means clampin said body on the object and spacing sai body away from the object throughout the extent of the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby collection of dirt, moisture, or ice around the object is minimized.
5, A guard for an object of the character described, comprising an elongated body to lie along the object with longitudinal parts flanking the object, and spaced-apart mountings for said body on the object, spacing said body away from the object throughout the extent of the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby collection of dirt, moisture, or ice around the object is minimized.
6. A guard for an object of the character described comprising an elongated body of thin arc-shaped cross section to lie along the object with longitudinal edges flanking the object, and spaced-apart mountings for said body on the-object, spacing said body away from the object throughout the extent of the body, and leaving an open space around the object at both ends of the body, whereby collection of dirt, moisture, or ice around the object is minimized.
7 A guard for an object of the character described comprising an elongated body of -means on the respective legs holding said body, bar and block together and clamping said object in said notches.
