- This invention relates generally to'guy guards of the type comprising an elongated protective member which is associated with a pole guy, or similar bracing element, for the purpose or 'increasing the visibility of the guy, and for pro tecting persons and animals against injury which, in the absence of such a guard, might be caused by such persons or animals moving unintentionally into forcible contact with an unguarded guy, and more specifically to an improved guy guard of the type mentioned which is provided with improved means for securing the guard to a guy element with which it is to be assoc'iated,the predominant object of the invention being 'to'provide an improved guy guard which include securing means for securing the guard to a guy, which is of extremely simple construction and arrangement and which greatly simplifies the task of applying the guard to a guy.

This invention relates generally to'guy guards of the type comprising an elongated protective member which is associated with a pole guy, or similar bracing element, for the purpose or 'increasing the visibility of the guy, and for pro tecting persons and animals against injury which, in the absence of such a guard, might be caused by such persons or animals moving unintentionally into forcible contact with an unguarded guy, and more specifically to an improved guy guard of the type mentioned which is provided with improved means for securing the guard to a guy element with which it is to be assoc'iated,the predominant object of the invention being 'to'provide an improved guy guard which include securing means for securing the guard to a guy, which is of extremely simple construction and arrangement and which greatly simplifies the task of applying the guard to a guy.

In the drawings, wherein is shown for the purf pose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates generally the improved guy guard of thepresent invention. The
guy guard A comprises an elongated member I formed of metal, or other suitable material, said member being of semicircular cross-sectional shape, as is shown to good advantage in Fig. '4, and the material of said member being rolled at opposite sides thereof to provide said member with opposed beads 2 which extend longitudinally of the sides of the member A from end to end thereof, The opposite ends of the member I are provided with inclined edges *3, as is shown in Fig. 3, which give to said opposite end portions of said member the curved formation shown in Fig. 2.
The means for securing the member :I of the guy ard A to a guyelement comprises .a plurality of clamping assemblies which are asso- -.ciatedwith said member [,rthereibeingiazpair of such clamping assemblies which are designated by the reference character B and which are respective'ly disposed in positions spaced inwardly of the opposite ends of the member I. Each clamping assembly Bcomprises a pair of clamping jaws 4 which are shaped as is shown to good advantage in'Fig. 4; that is to say, theclamping jaws 4 of each clamping assembly B are pro- V-l'CiEd with oppositely bowed portions-4a, and outwardly projected, integral portions db which are extended in opposite directions from end portions of said bowed portions 4a. The member I of the guy guard A has formed through the wall thereof at the location of each of the clamping assemblies B a slot 5, the portions of the clamping jaws l of each clamping assembly B which are'looated adjacent to the junctions of the bowed portions ta and the outwardly extended portions 4b of said jaws, being extended through the related slot '5.
The inner faces of the outwardly projected portions 417 of theclamping jaws normally contact with outer face portions of the wall of the member I located laterally of the slot 5 so as to support the clamping jaws with respect to said member I, and it is to be noted that the outwardly projected portions 41) of the clamping jaws 4 are of such length, with relation to the transverse dimension of the slot 5, that said outwardly projected portions "4b may not pass through the slot when the clamping jaws are in the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 4. The clamping jaws t are assembled with the member I by-moving said clamping jaws in turn to the positions in which the clamping jaws are shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, in which positionsthe outwardly projected portions 4?; of said jaws may be passed endwise through the slot 5, the-clamping jaws thereafter being moved to the positions in-which they are shown by full lines in Fig. 1.
Each of the clamping jaws lhas formed therethrough at 'a point adjacent toits lower end an aperture 6, and these apertures are disposed in alinement when the clamping jaws are in the approximate relative positions in which they are shown by full lines in Fig.4. When the clamping j awsare in their effective clamping positions, as shown by full lines in Fig. 4, a bolt is extended through the apertures 5 of said clamping jaws, said bolt being provided with a head Ia which contacts with the outer face of :one of the clamping jaws, and a nut 8 "being mounted on .the :screwthreaded shank portion of said bolt which contacts with .the .outer face :'of the other of said clamping jaws. The bolt is of conventional construction, being provided with a noncircular portion lb located immediately adjacent to the bolt head 1a, and the aperture 6 of the mpi g law 4 through which thi noncircular bolt portion extends is correspondingly shaped so that the bolt will not rotate when the nut 8 is adjusted thereon. Likewise, for manufacturing reasons, the aperture 6 of the other clamping jaw is similarly shaped in order that the clamping jaws may be duplicates and hence may be employed in the clamping assembly interchangeably.
In applying the improved guy guard disclosed herein to a guy element G, the bolt and nut assemblies are removed from the clamping assemblies B and the guy guard A is alined longitudinally with relation to the guy element. The clamping jaws 4 of the clamping assemblies B are spread apart at their lower ends and the guy guard is moved downwardly with respect to the guy element so that the clamping jaws of the respective clamping elements B are disposed at opposite sides of the guy element. The bolts 1 are then extended through the apertures of the clamping jaws of the clampin assemblies B, after which the nuts are applied to the bolt and are drawn up thereon to cause the clamping jaws of said clamping assemblies to be drawn toward each other so as to securely grip the guy element therebetween.
In Fig. 5 an arrangement is illustrated where the lower portion of the guy guard A is secured to an anchor rod G to which a guy element G is attached, instead of having the guy guard secured wholl to the guy element, as is shown in Fig. 1. When the guy guard is secured in place as illustrated in Fig. 5 a clampin assembly C is employed which is constructed and arranged in strict accordance with the clamping assemblies B, as previously described herein, with the exception that the bowed portion of the clamping jaws 4c of said clamping assembly C are slightly larger than the corresponding portions of the clamping jaws of the clamping assemblies B. In order to provide for the use of the clamping assembly C the wall of the member I of the guy guard A is provided with a slot 5' which is located immediately adjacent to the lower end of said member, and portions of the clamping jaws of said clamping assembly extend through said slot 5' in the manner and for the purpose previously explained herein in connection with the description of the clamping assemblies B.
When the guy guard A is secured in place as shown in Fig. 5 the anchor rod G is clamped between the clamping jaws 4c of the clamping assembly C, in the manner heretofore explained herein in the description of the use of the clamping assemblies B. Also, when the lower portion of the guy guard is secured to an anchor rod to which the guarded guy element is attached, the upper portion of said guy guard is secured to the guy element, as is shown in Fig. 1, by an upper clamping assembly B (not shown in Fig. 5).
It is to be noted that the parts of the clamping jaws 4 of the clamping assemblies B which extend through the slots 5 of the elongated member I, and of which the laterally projected portions 45 form parts are of less width than the bowed portions 4a of said clamping jaws. Because of this situation the clamping jaws 4' are provided with shoulders 4d which are located beneath the lower face of the Wall of 4 the elongated member I, and these shoulders limit upward movement of said clamping jaws with respect to the elongated member I by contacting with the lower face of the wall of said elongated member I.
We claim:
1. A guy guard comprising an elongated member adapted for disposition in a position adjacent to a guy assembly to be guarded thereby, and means adapted for securing said member in position with respect to said guy assembly, said securing means comprising a pair of related clamping jaws having clamping portions and portions which are projected laterally from ends of said clamping portions, said elongated member having an opening formed through a wall thereof through which portions of a pair of said clamping jaws are extended so as to support said clamping jaws for pivotal movement with respect to said elongated member and the combined lengths of said laterally projected portions of said pair of clamping jaws being greater than the transverse dimension of said opening so as to prevent undesigned withdrawal of said clamping jaws from said opening, and means cooperating with the free end portions of said clamping jaws for moving said free end portions of said clampin jaws toward each other so as to clamp a portion of a guy assembl therebetween.
2. A guy guard comprising an elongated member adapted for disposition in a position adjacent to a guy assembly to be guarded thereby, and means adapted for securing said member in position with respect to said guy assembly, said securing means comprising a pair of related clamping jaws having clampin portions and portions which are projected laterally in opposite directions from ends of said clamping portions, said elongated member having an opening formed through a wall thereof through which portions of a pair of said clamping jaws are extended so as to support said clamping jaws for pivotal movement with respect to said elongated member and the combined lengths of said laterally projected portions of said pair of clamping jaws being greater than the transverse dimension of said opening so as to prevent undesigned withdrawal of said clamping jaws from said opening, and means cooperatin with the free end portions of said clamping jaws for moving said free end portions of said clamping jaws toward each other so as to clamp a portion of a guy assembly therebetween.
3. A guy guard comprising an elongated member adapted for disposition in a position adjacent to a guy assembl to be guarded thereby, and means adapted for securing said member in position with respect to said guy assembly, said securing means comprising a pair of related clamping jaws having clamping portions and portions which are projected laterally in opposite directions from ends of said clamping portions, said elongated member having an opening formed through a wall thereof through which portions of a pair of said clamping jaws are extended so as to support said clamping jaws for pivotal movement with respect to said elongated member and the combined lengths of said laterally projected portions of said pair of clamping jaws being greater than the transverse dimension of said opening so as to prevent undesignecl withdrawal of said clamping jaws from said opening, and means comprising a bolt and nut assembly cooperating with the free end portions of said clamping jaws for moving said 5 8 2 free end portions 01' said clamping jaws toward UNITED STATES PATENTS each other so as to clamp a portion of a guy as-' Number Name Date sembly therebevween- 324,225 Carhart Aug. 11, 1885 KENNETH R.
