FIRE-BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed January 3, 1916. Serial No. 69,943.
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Otsego, in the county of Wyoming and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fire baskets and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be assembled with convenience and facility, and which may be readily constructed in a size which the necessities of practice may require.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fire basket whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view with parts in elevation of a fire basket constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device as illustrated in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 a view in top plan illustrating a fire basket constructed in accordance with my invention, but of a design different from that shown in the preceding views.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, l-1 denote a plurality of supporting pedestals of predetermined configuration and height and each of said pedestals is provided with a vertically disposed opening or bore 2, through which the upstanding bar or rod 3 is disposed, said rod being also of a predetermined length and serving as an anchoring means for the side bars 4 of the basket. Each of the bars 4 is of a predetermined length and has its end portions provided with the openings 5, through which the rods 3 are directed, and where by the basket is maintained in assembled relation.
The manner of assembling the device is thought to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, and it is to be noted that the lower bars 4c serve as supports for the grate bars 6, arranged in predetermined relative spaced relation.
In view of the foregoing, it will be readily understood that the several parts comprised in my improved device are capable of ready removal whereby the basket may be made of different designs in accordance with the requirements of practice, and for this reason I have illustrated the basket in Fig. 2 rectangular in top plan, while in Fig. 3 I have disclosed the basket as triangular in top plan.
While I have found my basket advantageous as a coke basket and in connection with forges, I have also found that a has ket constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention may be used with equal facility in mine ventilation. It will also be observed that the basket may be built as high as desired by simply adding more of the bars 4, and that should one of the bars burn out, another may be quickly substituted. It will also be appreciated that the basket may be quickly taken apart and set up, and also that there is no danger of the basket turning over. It has also been found in practice that there is no danger of the fire rolling out and that the ashes may be quickly removed by scraping along the spaces between the bars. In practice 1 prefer to form the bars of cast iron and when the device is used for the purpose of ventilation, I have found that the cast iron adds to the radiation and therefore in creases the ventilation.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a basket constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particuuarly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the presuperposed relation, and i additional bars having their extremities removably resting upon the lowermost of the first named bars and arranged substantially in parallelism. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. MEAD.
