rrr Starts NATHANIEL BATES, OF DUBBS, MISSISSIPPI;
FIREPLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,998, dated October 16, 1900. Application led April 28,1900. Serial No. 14,718. (No model.)
To all w/tom, t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL BATES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dubbs, in the county of Tunica and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireplaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in lireplaces which are formed in iiat plates, sections, or pieces secured together.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved fireplace. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is also a vertical section taken at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2 and practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig'. A is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line L 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar section taken practically on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the tie-bar for the structure.
The back A of the fireplace is inclined toward the center from a point above a trans verse center line to the upper edge of the back, so that the upper portion of the back is tapering, and near the tapering edges of the back A battens 11 are preferably made integral with the front face of the back A, as is shown in Fig. 3, and a transverse rib 10 is formed on the same face of the back A, near the bottom, and this rib is generally utilized as a support for a hearthstone. Side pieces 13 are bolted, riveted, or otherwise secured to the back A and extend from the bottom of the back to the commencement of the inclined upper edges of the back, and each side 13 is preferably provided with a front plate 14, which may be of an ornamental character, if desired, and this front plate usually extends upward beyond the upper edge of the side pieces 13, as is indicated in Fig. 1. The battens 11 serve to support upper side sections 12, which rest at their bottoms upon the main side sections 13, and these upper side sections l2 may be attached to the back A and to the main side sections 13 in any suitable or approved manner, or they may be secured to the battens 11; but under all constructions of the fireplace the upper portion thereof is open. The main side pieces 13 are braced and prevented from spreading by employing a connecting or tie bar 15, which connecting or tie bar, as shown in Fig. 6, has slots 16 made therein, arranged to receive the upper edges of the sides 13, and preferably the tie or connecting bar 15 is of such length that its ends proj ect beyond the sides of the fireplace. This connecting or tie bar may be employed as a partial support for a mantelpiece or a shelf.
The upper front portion of the fireplace is closed by a breastplate 17, and this breastplate bears against the inner surface of the tie or connecting plate 15, which inner surface is usually beveled, and the breastplate is rabbeted, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive the forward edges of the upper side sections 12. The various upper sections may be secured together by bolts, rivets, or other forms. of fastening devices, and a collar 18 is fitted to the top of the fireplace, which collar may form the lower section of a flue.
It will be observed that the fireplace may be constructed in a dwelling quickly and economically, and that, if desired, it may be incased or inclosed at its back, sides, and upper portion by masonry, brickwork, or the like. I furthermore desire it to be understood that while the parts are preferably constructed of metal they may be made of stone or of composition or of any material that may prove satisfactory for the purpose.
Having thus described. my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved fireplace comprising the back piece A having battens 11, the vertical side pieces 13, tiebar15,the breastplate 17 ,top side sections 12, which rest on the battens and side body-sections, the body of the structure being rectangularand the top contracted and sloping on front and sides, as shown and described.
2. A back provided with a support for a hearthstone, the upper side edges of the back being upwardly inclined in direction of the IOO 1o ranged for engagement with the tiebar, and
acollai located at the upper portion of the firepl'ae'e, for the purpose fdeseribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
N ATHANIEL BATES.
