BASE FOR MASTS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 4, 1913.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST ENTENMANN, a subject of the King of Wurttemberg, Germany, and residing at Backnang, Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Bases for Masts and the like.
The present invention relates to a base for masts and the like and consists in the provision of a reinforced concrete sleeve within which the mast is suspended by means of screw-bolts allowing the mast to be adjusted longitudinally without disturbing the base. Means are also provided for lengthening the base, if a considerable heightening of the mast should be required.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is illustrated, Figure 1 representing a side view of the base in its normal shape, partly in section and partly in elevation, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the upper part of the base in lengthened condition. Fig. 3 is a plan of the base, Fig. 4: a cross-section of the same on the line AB of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a cross-section on the line C-D of Fig. 2.
The base is composed of a sleeve a made of reinforced concrete and protected at the ends by angle-sectioned metal rings 0. The reinforcing elements 2) are connected at the upper ends to screws 0? which hold the rings 0 in position and also an annular disk h from which a plurality of screw-bolts g is suspended within the sleeve a. The lower ends of the bolts 9 are headed so as to form supports for the mast 7 which bears against the heads by means of a metal ring or cap 2'. The screw-bolts g are also passed through a horizontal flange formed on a clamp collar 70 which is secured to the mast f and which holds the latter firmly in position. A cap Z surrounds the mast and covers the upper end of the sleeve so as to exclude moisture from the interior of the base, a packing m being arranged about the mast to make the joint tight.
It is evident that a slight heightening of the mast can be effected by a mere adjustment of the nuts on the bolts 9 after the collar 70 has been loosened. If a considerable heightening of the mast should be required, a. lengthening ofthe sleeve must be efiected. For this purpose two semi-cylindrical concrete shells 0 are provided which are assembled from opposite sides of the mast and placed on top of the sleeve a, as shown in Fig. 2, with the longitudinal edges 6 abutting against each other. When the base is to be lengthened in this manner, the cap Z and the nuts of the screws of are removed whereupon the mast is raised by means of a winch or the like. After the vmast has been raised sufliciently, the shells 0 are placed in position on the sleeve. Loose screw-bolts a, which are passed through the walls of the shells 0 from end to end, are formed at their lower ends with internally screw-threaded sockets which are applied to the screws d so as to hold the shells in position. The mast is then lowered so that the disk it can receive the upper ends of the bolts a. By means of nuts applied to the latter, the disk h and thereby the mast f can be fixed in the raised position, the cap Z being now accommodated to the assembled shells 0.
I claim 1. A base for masts and the like, comprising a reinforced concrete sleeve, an annular disk supported on the upper end of said sleeve, and screw-bolts suspended from said disk within the sleeve so as to allow of longitudinal adjustment, said bolts having heads at their lower ends adapted to support the mast, substantially as set forth.
2. A base for masts and the like, comprising a reinforced concrete sleeve, an annular disk supported on the upper end of said sleeve, and screw-bolts suspended from said disk within the sleeve so as to allow of longitudinal adjustment, said bolts having heads at their lower ends adapted to support the mast, the upper part of the sleeve being formed of detachable semi-circular shells, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
