Be it known that I, ERNEST C. GARBER,

a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterloo, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to penholders.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel means for removing a pen from a penholder and thus preventing the fingers from becoming soiled when the same has become useless.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved means for holding the pen removing means in position and at the same time providing a means for removably receiving a pen.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device that is simple in construction, eificient in operation and one that can be manufactured and put upon the market at a minimum cost.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my invention partly in section; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line ali of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 1 represents a handle or holder which has its outer end reduced as at 2 to provide a shoulder 3 and which handle is further provided with a longitudinal groove 4 extending from point approximately intermediate its ends to its outer end. Slidably mounted in the groove 4 is a pen removing rod 5, the inner end of which is looped as at 6 to form an operating handle.

For the purpose of holding the rod 5 in position in the groove, I have rigidly mounted adjacent the end of the reduced portion 2 by means of a rivet 7 or the like a sleeve 8, whi ch in this instance consists essentially ofaslngle piece of metal curved as at 9 intermediate its ends which ends are bent inwardlv upon themselves to form clamping arms 10 and the space between the curved portion 9 and the clamping arms 10 constituting a pen seat for a pen 11. The sleeve is further provided with a. longitudinal slot 12 arranged in alinement with the groove l, the sides of the slot being in alinement with the opposite spaced edges of the clamping arms 10. Slidably mounted between the sldes of the slots and the opposite edges of the arms is a thickened upstanding head 13 of the pen removing rod, said head having a transversely extending recess lt for engagement with the pen.

Disposed about the sleeve 8 on the reduced portion 2 is a finger grip 15, the upper end of which bears against the shoulder 3 and which end is engaged by the looped end 6 of the rod 5 and provides a stop for the same thus limiting the outward movement of the rod when the same is being operated.

Itwill be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a novel means for removing a pen point from a holder and at the same time one that is simple in construction and efiicient in operation.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thu fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A pen holder comprising a handle having one end reduced to provide a shoulder and a longitudinal groove therein, a sleeve mounted on the reduced end and extending therebeyond, said sleeve consisting of a single piece of metal bent into a cylindrical formation, clamping arms formed by bending the ends of the metal inwardly upon themselves, said clamping arms being arranged in spaced relation with each other constituting a resilient pen seat, said sleeve being provided with a longitudinal slot in alinement with the sides of the edges of the arms and with the sides of the groove, a rod slidably mounted in the groove and retained by the sleeve, an upstanding pen receiving head formed by thickening the outer end of the rod, said head being arranged in the slot in the sleeve and between the sides of the arms and provided With a transverse groove handle for limiting outward movement of for receiving and facilitating the removal of. the rod. 10 the pen point from the seat when the rod is In testimony whereof I aflix my signature moved, an operating handle formed in the in presence of tWo Witnesses.
