Description

APPLICATION FILED 1113.27; 1911.
GFA Jam/s CASON F. ADAMS, OF PAVO, GEORGIA.
FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 27, 1911.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Serial No. 611,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OASON F. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pavo, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to files and more particularly to a new and novel form of file which is primarily adapted for use in the sharpening of plow shares and is designed with a view to providing a file which may be inexpensively manufactured, and which can be easily and quickly manipulated for the purpose described.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a novel form of file holder whereby a file of the common triangular form may be rigidly held in position to prevent one of its giing surfaces to the article which is being With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists of the novel features detail perspective view of the file.
Referring in detail to the drawing 5 designates the body of the holder which is of cylindrical form. Intermediate of its ends the holder is provided with a longitudinal recess 6. Within this recess the file 7, which as shown is of the common triangular form, is adapted to be arranged. A stud 8 is formed upon one end of the file and is adapted to be disposed in a socket 9 provided in one of the end walls of the re cess 6 of the holder.
It will be observed that that portion of the holder in which the recess 6 is formed is of reduced diameter as indicated at 10 and the inner end of one of the larger portions of the holder is provided with a recess 11 which receives the other end of the file, said recess being alined with the longitudinal recess 6 of the holder. The end of the body of the holder in which the recess 11 is provided is also formed with an annular peripheral groove 12 to receive the split band or ferrule 13. This band or ferrule is adapted to he slipped over the end of the body in which the groove 12 is formed to close the recess 11 and engage upon the end of'the file to retain the same therein. In this manner all liability of release of the file from the holder as it is moved over the blade being sharpened, is obviated.
' From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised an improved file holder of extremely simple construction whereby the file may be readily removed or arranged therein so that as it is moved across the edge of the blade being sharpened, but one of its surfaces will engage therewith. The file may be readily adjusted by simply moving the band or ferrule 13 inwardly off of the end of the enlarged portion of the holder so that the file can be removed and one of its other surfaces arranged outermost. After the ferrule is again arranged over the end of the file the same is in position for further use. Owing to the ease with which the file .may be arranged in the holder and the few parts employed in the construction thereof, it will be seen that I have devised a file holder which is extremely convenient in use and efficient in practical operation. It is also very durable and may be manufactured at small cost.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A file holder comprising a body having a longitudinal recess and an annular peripheral groove intersecting said recess at one end, in combination with a file adapted to be arranged in said longitudinal recess and engaged in one of the end walls thereof, and a split ferrule rotatably disposed in the annular groove of said body and engaging over the other end of said file.
2. A file holder comprising a cylindrical body having a longitudinal recess and an annular groove intersecting said recess at one of its ends, said body being provided with a socket at the other end of said longitudinal recess, in combination with a file adapted to have one of its ends disposed in said socket, and means movably arranged in the annular groove of said body and engaged upon the other end of said file to retain the same in said recess.
3. A file holder comprising a cylindrical body having a reduced intermediate portion provided with a longitudinal recess and an annular peripheral groove intersecting said recess at one end, in combination with a file to be arranged in said longitudinal recess and engaged with one of the end walls thereof, and a resilient retaining element rotatively arranged in said annular groove and engaging with the other end of said file to retain the same in the recess.
4. A file holder comprising a cylindrical body having a reduced intermediate portion provided with a longitudinal recess, said recess extending into the body beyond the reduced portion thereof at one of its ends, said body at the other end of the recess being provided with a socket, in combination with a file having a stud formed on one end 15 tively engaged in said groove over the end 20 of the file to retain the same in said recess. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two wltnesses.
