ARTHUR K. TAYLOR, (3F JACKSONVILLE, FLQRIDA, ASSIGNQR TO TAYLGR NURSERY BABY BED COMPANY, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLOR-IDA, A CORPORATION OF FLORIDA.
BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ARTHUR H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Bed, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cribs and the invention relates more specifically to a canopy which is to be employed upon a crib whether of the ordinary structure or of that form illustrated in my prior Patent, #928,821, dated July 20th, 1909.
In the form of crib disclosed in my prior patent just mentioned and in fact in any form of crib it is desirable that means be provided for preventing the child within the crib from crawling over the sides thereof, and while a number of devices have been designed with a view to preventing this, they are not desirable in every respect.
In carrying out the present invention there is mounted to swing from side to side on the crib and above the same, a number of frame members over which is stretched a canopy in the nature of netting of rather large mesh, although if made suiliciently strong, a smaller mesh will serve as well and in addition will prevent the child being annoyed by insects.
While similar canopy supporting frames have been heretofore devised, they have in all instances been adapted to fold either toward the head or the foot of the crib and are therefore not only cumbersome but render the removal of the child from the crib exceedingly troublesome.
The present invention contemplates however the mounting of the frame members of the device in such manner that they may be folded toward either side of the crib whereby when they are thus folded the entire length of the crib will be exposed and the child may be readily removed from the crib at either side thereof.
A further feature of the invention resides in the manner of mounting the frame members of the device, swivel heads being provided for this purpose, to which the extremities of the frame members are pivotally connected. By so connecting the frame members with the heads, and by swiveling the heads, the folding of the frame members to either side of the crib will result in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1916. Serial No. 514,226.
turning movement of the heads upon their swivels so that the frame members will readily and automatically assume a position one flat upon the other. This manner of mounting the frame members embodies advantages over such. means as has heretofore been employed in that in prior devices the frame members at their outer ends would be separated to a considerable degree rendering the entire device cumbersome and unsightly.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a crib such as is described in my prior patent heretofore mentioned, the crib being illustrated as embodying the canopy. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the crib and the canopy showing the positions assumed by the frame members when in unfolded position and also the position assumed by the heads to which they are pivoted. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the frame members folded. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken in a plane from front to rear through a portion of the crib showing the manner of mounting the swiveled heads to which the frame members are pivoted.
In the drawings, the crib is illustrated as comprised in part of a metallic substantially rectangular bottom 5, which at one end is curved upwardly as at 6 whereby to engage with a supporting structure 7 that is similar in character to that illustrated and described in my prior patent above referred to. In the bottom 5 of the crib, there is arranged a spring mattress 8 of any desired form and connected to the side member of the bottom 5 by means of suitable standards 9, are sides 10. In addition to the sides 10, the crib includes a head 11 and a foot 11 that are rigid with respect to the bottom 5.
A bar 12 is secured upon the head and upon the foot of the crib, and swiveled upon this upstanding bar is a disk like head 13 formed with a number of perforations in .-i
which are pivotally received the inner extremities of the side members 14 of certain frame members which are embodied in the structure and are designed to support the netting heretofore mentioned. to the side members 14, these frame members include each a connecting portion 15 so that the members are substantially U-shaped. It will be understood from the foregoing that the frame members derived from the por- In addition the frame 'members and that when these frame members are unfolded as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the netting Wlll be fully stretched and will protect the entire crib or inother words will form a canopy above the entire crib.
In order to hold the frame members in unfolded position such as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, straps 17 are secured one to each of the end ones of the frame members at the ends of the connecting portions thereof, and these straps are formed each with a button hole 18 which receives a button or stud 19 upon the respective side 10 of the crib and at the respective end thereof, it being understood that the straps at either side of the crib may be disengaged from the button at the same side of the crib when it is desired to fold or collapse the frame com prised of the several frame members.
As heretofore stated, the heads 13 to which the frame members are pivoted or hinged will be capable of turning upon their swivel connections with the head and foot members of the crib and the advantage of such a construction will be readily apparent inasmuch as when the straps at one side of the crib have been disengaged from the buttons, the members may be folded over or moved to collapsed position in which position they are illustrated in Fig. 3, which movement will result in the heads turning upon their swivels whereby to permit of the several frame 7 Copies of this patent may be members resting flat one upon the other which would not be the case werethe heads rigid with respect to the members of the crib upon which they are mounted.- The fact will further be appreciated that it is not necessary to turn or rotate these heads 13 by hand but that the mere folding. of the frame members will result in their rotation in the proper direction, audit will further be understood that the frame members may be folded to lie to either side ofthe crib. 'It will further be understood that owing to the fact that the frame members extend longitudinally of the crib, a child may be more readily removed therefrom than were the members arranged to extend transversely of the crib whether at the middle thereof or at either end.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a crib, of a centrally disposed upstanding bar secured to each end portion of the crib, a dish-like head centrally mounted uponvthe upper end portion of each bar and adapted to rotate, a plurality of bows frictionallyengaging the outer faces of the heads and pivotally connected to said heads, said bows constituting connections between the heads, the connections between the bows and heads being concentrically disposed about the pivots of the heads and said bows being adapted to fold one upon the other and to extend toward either side of the crib, a coarse fabric connected to the bows, and means for holding the fabric taut and with the bows extended out of folded'positions. r V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have'hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
