To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn STRICKLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bicknell, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopies, of which the following is a specification.

The device which is the subject-matter of the present application for patent is designed to protect babies, when placed on the ground or on the floor, from flies, insects, etc., and incidentally to prevent the baby from crawling away from the notice of the attendant.

It is the object of the invention to provide a device of the kind stated whichlis foldable into small and compact form for convenience in storage and transportation, and to this end it consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the frame of the device; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view showing the frame folded, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the top center piece of the frame.

Referring specifically to the drawing, the device comprises a foldable frame having a cover 5 of mosquito netting or other suitable screening material. The frame is arranged to provide a dome-shaped structure which completely incloses the baby sitting or lying on the floor or on the ground. The frame is foldable for convenience in shipment and storage, and it is constructed as follows: A top center piece 6 has on its under side ears 7 between which are pivoted ribs 8 in a manner similar to the ribs of an umbrella. The ribs have a substantially quadrantal curve and they extend downward from the top piece. Each rib is fastened at its lower end to a base piece 9. The base pieces 9 are connected in a continuous annular series by links 10, there being two of such links between each base piece, and the members of each pair of links being pivotally connected as indicated at 11. The pivotal connection between the links and the basepieces is made by slotting the ends of the latter, as

indicated at 12, to receive the link ends, and

passing pivot pins 13 through said link ends and the slotted ends of the base pieces. The

links and. the base pieces are curved so that when the ribs 8 are spread, said links and base pieces assume a circular form and serve as a base for supporting the device on the floor or ground. The side of the center piece 6 has a groove 14 in which the top of the cover 5 is held by an elastic band 15. The cover fits over the outside of the ribs. To the bottom edge of the cover is sewed or otherwise secured a hem 16, which is weighted by means of shot 17. The hem encircles the outside of the circular or annular base of the frame and rests on the ground. The

cover thus rises in the shape of a dome from the ground and it is held in this shape by the ribs 8.

The frame is folded by flexing the links 10 at their pivotal connection 11 so that they point inward, after which the ribs are swung inward toward the center. This brings the ribs closely together and makes a small and compact frame which economizes space when carrying or storing the device. The cover 5 need not be removed when the frame is being folded, unless wire screening is employed for the cover, in which event the cover must be removed before the frame can be folded.

The device herein described is very simple in construction, it can be cheaply manufactured, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
