Description

UNITED STATES JAMES J. Buss, or' woRcEsrEn, MAssAcHUsi-Jrrs.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNlEE-SHARPENER S.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,495, dated J une 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. RUss, of the city and county of Worcester and State of Massa-chusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Knife-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing Which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 reprcsents a side view of my improved knife-sharpener, and Fig. 2 represents, upon an enlarged scale, a central longitudinal section at line A B, Fig. l. i
To`enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I Will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my in vention consists in the combination, with the holding-frame, constructed as described, of the cutter and its holding-screw, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing the pa-rt marked A represents the holding-frame, which consists of the head A' and handle B. 1 Said frame is made of metal and in the form shown, the head A' being provided with a pair of horns, a a, projecting from the upper part thereof, while the lower part is formed square across, so that it Will rest firmly upon a table or other support, when desired. The head A' and handle B may be cast more or less ornamental, to suit the taste of the manufacturer. A Vertical opening is formed through the head A', centrally between the horns a a, to receive the cutter (J, which latter is formed of a small bar of steel, with its edges Slightly beveled so as to present two sharp corners. This cutter is arranged in the opening of the head, and projects up between the horns a a in such a manner as to form equal angles between the sharp corners of the cutters and the inner'side of each of the horns.
The sides b b of the opening are formed-on the same bevel as the sides of the cutter C, and the lat-ter is secured in position by means of a holding-screw, D, which screws through the side of the head A' against the cutter C, thereby pressing the beveled edges of the cutter against thethe case when the cutters are secured upon the side of their supporting-blocks. The cutter C can be adjusted up or down as its edges become worn by simply loosening the holding-screw D and sliding cutter within the opening.
When sharpening a knife the operator takes hold of the handle B with his left hand and rests the head A' upon a table or other support; then with his right hand he draws the edge of the knife to be sharpened alternately through the angles between the horns a and the cutter, and the sharp corners of the latt-er shave off the metal at the sides of the knife-blade, and produce the proper sharpness of edge. p
Having described my improved knife-sharpener, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, With a holding-frame in a knife-sharpener provided With supporting-bevel's b b, of the beveled-sided cutter U and pressingscrew D, substantially as shown and ,described JAMES J. RUSS.
Witnesses THos. H. DODGE, CHAs. H. BURLmGH.
