NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. TOWNSEND,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,243, dated August 25, 1891.
Application filed May 22, 1891. Serial No. 393,749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TOWNSEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Knives, Scissors, and Analogous Implements;
and I do hereby declare that the following is' a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has forits object to combine a graduated hone with a file, the latter being so arranged in the hone that the cutting-edges of scissors or shear-blades may be dressed down on the proper bevel prior to being smoothed on said hone; and the said invention therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawing, and substantially claimed.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a sharpener constructed according to my invention, and, referring by letter to said drawing, A represents a rectangular block turned down at one end to form a handle. Out in one face of the block is an inclined notch B, and facing this notch is a file a inserted in a groove a in said block. One side 0 of the block is preferably smooth for the reception of a label, while the other sides D, E, and F are coated with emery or other sharpening material of different grades of fineness.
Scissors or shear-blades are held in the inclined notch Bin the block A and reciprocated on the file a to dress the cutting-edges to the proper bevel. Afterward these cutting-edges are smoothed and finished on the emery-coated sides of said block.
Knivesandanalogousimplementsaresharpened by honing them on the emery-coated sides of the block A, and by providing this block with the inclined notch and the file above described I furnish a device on which all of the edged tools ordinarily employed about a house may be dressed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A graduated hone having one side thereof provided With an inclined notch, and a file inserted in the hone to face said notch, substantially as set forth.
2. A rectangular block turned down at one end to form a handle, one side of the block provided with an inclined notch, a file inserted in said block to face the notch, and a coating of sharpening material on certain sides of the aforesaid block, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE H. TOWNSEND.
