Letters Patent No. 100,7 71, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT m sxrvmc-mcnnms.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the same.
Be it known that we, JOHN KAV'ANAGH, of Provideuce, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, and MOSES S, MOULTON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a newand improvedSkiving-Machine; and
'- we do hereby declare that the'fi llowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying parts forming partof this specification. a
This invention relates to improvements in machines for skiving leatlie'r and consists in the combination, on a suitable Stand of revolving wheels and adjustable cutters, under anarrangemeht whereby the leather to i he Skived, whether in straight orcu'rved strips, may
be attached to the faces of the said wheels, and drawn by turning them. under the cutters, suppoz ted near the said faces of the wheels, and pitched at any required angle, and perating to skivc or bevel the edges, as
hereinafter specific Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved machine,
wherein awheel, with a face perpendicular to its sides is used for skiviug straight pieces of leather.
. Figure-2 is a side elevation of the machine, with a bevel-faced wheel for skiviug curved or circular pieces. Figures 3 and dareside views of the wheels used. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A is a platform, and B, a vertical Stand thereon,
with a horizontal arm, 0, supporting at the outer end a drum or wheel, D, with a broad face perpendicular to the sides, and with a notch, E, in the said face.
F is a spring clamp; arranged in this notch to press against one wall of the said notch for clamping the H end of the piece of leather to be skived therein to hold it, while the other part lies on the face of the drum parallel with the sides, as'showu at G.
H is the Skiving-knife, supported above the face of the wheel in the Slotted Stock I by set-screws, in a wayto be adjusted to any required angle with the stock; the latter is supported in the arm K So as to rotate on its axis, and thearm K is supported in the vertically-adjustable and revolving spindle L,.r nouuted in the hollow stand B. a p
In fig. 2 a section of a wheel or drum, M, isshown, with a beveled face,'and supported on the end of the arm 0 on a vertically-adjustable spindle, N, supported in a tube, 0, connected to the arm 0 in the place of the wheel D. r
.This drum is also provided with a Spring clamp, P,
for engaging the end of the piece of leather to be skived,
which is placed on the face of the drum. This drum is for use when curved pieces of leather are to beskived,
It will be seen that no matter how thick or wide the leather may be, or what may be the required angle for the edge of the leather, the knife may be readily adjusted to accomplish the work much more efficiently than it can be done by haiid; also, that it may be done much more rapidly.
Having thuS described our invention.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut- Y 1. The combination of hollow stand B, spindle L, arm K, and Slotted tool-stock I, with the set-Screws, all arranged as and for the purpose specified.
2. A skiving-machine provided with wheel D and spring clamp to hold the leather in position, combined with a knife, H, adjusted and arranged to incise the leather with adrawing cut, and of any width or shape, as set forth.
