To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, AARON MENDELSON and SHEPARD J. GOLDBERG, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved box for holding cigarettes or the like and consists in providing a box having hinged sections preferably of metal, with improved means within the box for holding the cigarettes.

Another object of the invention is to provide improved means of the character specified which is carried by one of the sections of the box and held in such position as to cause a plurality of independent cigarette holders to be spaced apart in crossed relation when the vbox is open, whereby the cigarettes may be conveniently removed, whereas when the box is closed the sections will be hinged in alinement and snugly fit within the box.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts which will be illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cigarette box, with the sections opened out and the improved holders in supporting position; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the box closed; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of one of the holders.

In the illustrated form of the invention, the box is shown as comprising a pair of sections 10 and 11 which are provided with cooperating ears whereby they are pivoted by a pintle 12 permitting them to be readily opened and closed in the manner shown in the drawings. Transversely supported in the section 10 near the pivot point thereof is a pivot rod 18 on which are mounted in spaced relation a plurality of holders 14. These holders are preferably formed of single sections of sheet metal re-bent in U-form,

as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, providlng back portions 15 and side portions 16 which are of a curvature to conform to the contour'of the cigarettes 17 and also to grip the latter. To permit this, ribs 18 are formed in the side portions 16 adjacent to the back 15 and the edges and sides forming the gripping jaws and the holders are curved outwardly as shown at 19, while to add to the resiliency of the jaws elongated notches 20 are cut in the same so that the lower parts form sockets for receiving the cigarettes. The cigarettes are retained from displacement downwardly by the bottom portions 21 which have ears 22 formed at their rear ends for engagement with the pivot rod 13, there being suitable spacing means 23 in the form of a weak coil spring mounted on the pivot rod and between one of the outermost holders carried by the rod and the ad j acent side of the section 10.

'Pivoted through the spaced holders 14 is one leg of a substantially U-shaped frame 24, said leg also having intermediate holders 14' pivoted thereto and held in spaced relation to the holders 14 as by means of washers or other spacing means 25 located between each pair of holders, all of the holders opening in the same direction but the holders 14 being mounted nearer their up per ends so that said latter ends will lie beneath the ends of the holders 14. The other leg of the holder 24 has the bottom portions of the holders 14 attached thereto by means of ears 26 formed by curling the forward edges of the bottom portions of the holders 14 around said leg portion, in lieu of the rear portions as in the holders 14. The holders 14 are thus pivoted with respect to the holders 14 and are held in crossed and spaced relation relative thereto by means of a coiled spring 27 which forms one spacing means, the coil of which is mounted on the upper leg of the support 24 and which has one arm connected to the pivot rod 13 and the other operating against the back portion of the adjacent holder 14, so as to hold all of the holders 14 upward. Aspring 28 is mounted on the pivot rod 13 between the other side of the section 10 and the adjacent holder with respect to the position of the spacing means or spring 23 and has one arm contacting with the wall of the section 10 and the other arm contacting with the back of the adjacent holder 14, thus retaining the holders elevated in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
