To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELBA E. WHITTAKER, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for the Hair, of which the following is a description, reference be .ing had to the accompanying drawings which are a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in protecting devices for the hair and more particularly to protecting devices used 1n connection with the ordinary elastic indiarubber bathing caps.

The ordinary rubber caps used by ladies while in bathing when used alone are open to objection, inasmuch as while the material of which'the cap is made is formed of waterproof material and the water will not soak through the material, yet sufficient quantity will get between the edge of the cap and the skin of the wearer and Wet the hair.

. It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a protecting device for the hair which will overcome the above mentioned objection and provide a protector which will.

form a water tight closure between the ordinary rubber cap and the skin of the wearer and also serve to absorb and hold any moisture which may accidentally get beneath the bathing cap and keep the hair perfectly dry.

A further object of the invention is to provide a protecting device for the hair which may be easily arranged on the head ofthe wearer and which is very simple in construction and is inexpensive to manufacture. V

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the protecting device and its parts and combinations and all equivalents thereof.

In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete protecting device shown in open position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side of the device; Fig. 3 is a side perspective view there of as positioned and arranged on the head of a wearer, before the rubber cap used in connection therewith is covered over the device; Fig. 4 is a front perspective view thereof as arranged in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a side view of the complete device as arranged the head of the wearer in connection with a rubbercap; Fig. 6 is a similar View thereof in vertical section; and Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view thereof.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates a piece of fabric, approximately triangular in shape, forming the body portion of the device and which is provided with tie-strips 9 forming part thereof. The lower edge .of the body portion is folded over upon itself several times forming a thickened band 10 adapted to form the lower edge of the device when arranged on the head of the wearer. A strip of tape 11 sewed to the body portion of the fabric on the side opposite to the folded'band and extending to thejunction of the inner ends of the tie strips with the body portion serves to prevent stretching of the fabric at the band when the tie strips are tied together around the head of the wearer. An elastic binding band12 provided with a buckle 13 at one end and connected medially of its length with the lower edge of the body portion of the device by means of a short connection strip 14 is adapted to be arranged around and to cover the lower edge of an ordinary rubber cap 15 which is placed on over the body portion of the device.

In use, the lower edge of the body portion of the device is folded inthe manner shown and the folded portion placed around the back of the head to cover the hair with the body portion and tied together tightly thus formlng a covering of fabric for the hair and head. The ordinary rubber cap is then arranged over the device with the lower edge of the rubber covering the lower edge of the device. The elastic binding band is then arranged over the lower portion of the rubber cap and the two ends drawn tightly together and fastened by means of the buckle to assist in securely binding the fold of the body portion between the head of the wearer and the rubber cap, the rubber cap itself serving to tightly hold the fold in place.

The body portion of the device is formed of a fabric which will readily absorb moisture so that if any water should accidentally enter between the rubber cap and the skin of the wearer it would be absorbed by the fabric and the hair, would be kept. perfectly dry.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device is very simple in construction and ornate in appearance and is well adapted to per'formthe function for which it was designed.

hat I claim as my invention is, c 1. A protecting device for the hair, comprising a piece of' absorbent material shaped to fit within an ordinary bathing cap and to be placed around the head of the wearer and between the head and an ordinarybathing cap, and a means connected to the piece of material and adapted and constructed' to be placed outside of and entirely around the lower edge of the bathing cap to form a water tight closure between the head and the piece of material and the lower edge of the bathing cap.

Avprotecting device for the hair, comprising a piece of absorbent fabric shaped to be placed over the head of the wearer and beneath an ordinary bathing cap and having tie strings for binding the lower edge of the fabric tightly around the head, and a band connected to the fabric and adapted and constructed to be placed outside of and entirely around the lower edge of the bathing'cap to bind the lower edge of the bathing cap between the inner and outer portions of the device to form a water tight closure between the head and the, fabric and the lower edge of the bathing cap.

A protecting device for the hair, comprising an ordinary bathing cap, a piece of absorbent fabricshaped to be placed over the head ofthe wearer beneath the ordi nary bathing cap and having tie strings extending, from the lower portion thereof, and an elasticband connected to the fabrlc and tending from the lower corners of the body piece, a strip of tape sewed to the body portion, and extending to the strings, and a bindingband connected to the lower edge of the body piece and having means for connecting its ends together;
