PETER 1. WHITE AND warren. GRANT, or MQNEIL ISLAND,
WASHINGTON.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 9, 1912. Serial No. 714,264.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that we, PETER F. WHITE citizens of the United at McNeil Island, in the State of Washington, have new and useful Improve- States, residing county of Pierce, invented certain ments in Tooth-Brushes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, sue as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has special reference to tooth brushes and more particularly to an improved sanitary tooth brush which embraces a handle forming tool and a separable brush and head capable of being inclosed therein when not in use so as to maintain the brush in a clean and sanitary condition.
Another and important object of the invention consists in theprovision of a handle member of novel formation having a guideway retaining the brush member in a closed position whereby the same may be securely held when in use or not in use and which also renders the device very desirable in use when traveling inasmuch as the same can be I carried in the pocket or'packed in a suitcase or valise without'soiling the clothes.
I body,
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain combina tions and arrangements of parts as will be herein-after more fully and illustrated in the accompanying ings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side 'elevation'of our improved tooth brush when not in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the brush as in use. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the device as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1'. Fig. 6 is drawa detail perspective view of the brush ele-' ment removed.
As illustrated, our improved tooth brush embodies a handle 10 in the form of a hollow tube having a longitudinal slot-11 in its such slot terminating short of the end portions of the tube. One "end of the tube is closed by an end wall'lQ. while the other end is open. The side wall of the tube adjacent each of the ends is thickened is clearly shown in the drawing. The side edges of the. slot' 11 form a pair of'fianged sides or ribs 13 and in continuation of the copies'ot this patent'may be obtained for the brush element described, claimed vantages over and germs,
handle having five cents each, by addressing the ribs 13 are internal ribs 14 at the forward end of the handle for receiving-l and. holding therein. T is latter element is indicated by the numeral 15 and comprises a stem formed at its free edge with an enlargement 16 of substantially circular or oval cross section and conforming to the interior cross section of the tube forming the handle while the opposite longitudinal side edges of the stem are formed with grooves or guideways 17 for engage: ment with the ribs 13 and 14 of the handle members so as. to hold the brush element and head 18 securely in engagement with the handle. The enlargement 16 is preferably made to fit snugly within the enlarged open end of the handle so that the brush may be readily engaged in the handle when not in use or when desired to use the brush, so that accidental displacement of the brush element is prevented. It will also be observed that the back portion of the handle is reduced in thickness adjacent to the head to rovide a gripping portion, the curvature of which may be varied.
The parts are preferably constructed of hard rubber although the same may be con structed of bone or other desired material, as falls within the scope claimed.
It will thus be evident that the device can be economically produced and it will be further apparent that the device has many adview of the fact that when not in use, be inclosed and thereby not thus insuring o the same being kept absolutely clean and sanitary.
We claim:
A tooth brush comprising a tubular a slot extending longitudinally thereof, a brush carrying element having grooved sides engaged by the edges of saidslot and slidablewith reference to the handle, and a head on said brush carrying element adapted to close the end of sai handle when positioned therein. v In testimony whereof, we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
