GEM-SETTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Application filed May 5, 1914. Serial No. 836,538.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULLA O. BASHOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorris, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gem-Settings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for enhancing and promoting the refractive powers and fluoresence, and consequently the brilliancy, of diamonds and other gemsor precious stones, the object of the invention being to provide simple and effective means for this purpose.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention to a precious stone. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the same, the shell appearing in section. Fig. 3 is a hori- Zontal section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a shell or casing 1 to inclose the precious stone 2, which may be a diamond or other out stone or gem. This shell is made of a suitable transparent material, such as clear glass, within which the stone is suitably supported. as indicated at 3. The shell may conform in general to the shape of the stone, and is spaced therefrom at all points, except where the stone is fastened in position, to provide an intervening vacuum space 4. I have discovered that bv inclosing a gem or precious stone in a shell or jacket of this character, from which the air is exhausted. so that the stone is substantially in cacao. that the capacity of the gem to refract light rays is promoted and its brilliancy or fluoresence increased.
The shell may be made in two or more sections, which are sealed after the insertion of the gem in such a manner as to provide a substantially invisible joint, the air being exhausted from the space 4 in any known or suitable manner. The supporting means within the casing may consist of shoulders at spaced intervals on which the bezel of the diamond or gem may rest, or any other suitable means for holding the gem in position may be employed.
By the use of the words vacuum casing in the claims, it is, of course, to be understood that thereby is meant a shell or casing from which air has been substantially exhausted to produce a high-degree vacuum.
I claim 1. A. casing for a cut gem or precious stone comprising a body of transparent material of shape and dimensions corresponding substantially to the shape and dimensions of the stone to be inclosed thereby, said bodv being provided with means for supporting the stone therein in close contiguity thereto so as to form a narrow intervening space between the surfaces of the stone and cas ng from which the air may be substantially exhausted.
2. The combination with a cut gem or precious stone. of a casing of transparent material inclosing the stone, said casing being substantially of the same shape as the stone, but of s ightlv larger dimensions. and means for holding the stone supported within the casing and in spaced relation thereto, the intervening space being substantially devoid of air.
3. The combination with a cut gem or precious stone. of a casing of transparent material inclosing the stone, said casing being of substantiallv the same shape as the stone but of slightly greater dimensions. and notched shoulders upon the casing to en ga ge portions of the surface of the stone and hold the same spaced from the wall of the casing, the intervening space being substantially devoid of air.
4. The combination with a cut gem or precious stone, said stone having a girdle, of a casing of transparent material inclosing the stone, said casing being of substantially the same shape as the stone but of slightly larger dimensions, and a series of spaced projections upon the casing to engage the girdle of the stone to support and hold the stone spaced from the casing, the space between the stone and casing being substantially devoid of air.
ing held in slightly spaced relation and the 10 intervening space being substantially devoid of air.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
