GIM'lWIl-EWCK FOR OIL-DERRICKS.
Original application nice November .15, 3910, heriauqc. 592, 422. I'Jivided and this application filed December M, 1911. Serial No. 665,68?.
To all whom'it ma co /mom:
Be it known t at 1, Jules T. Heine e citizen of the United States, residing ,at Coolinge, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful 1m rovements in Crown-Blocks for Oii-Derri css, of which the following is :r s ecificetion i he invention relates to an improved crown blockfor supporting or sustaining the operet ivesheaves for derricks utilized inthe sinking of oil Wells. and the present application is e r'livisirm of the application filed by me iii-j the United States Patent ()iiice on the th do. of Noveniher,.l9l0,
. bearing Serial/Noni r 592,422, and, in
common with the invention therein described, the object of the present invention 15 to maintain the bearing boxes for the sheaves in. true alinement and to permit of the same beih readily and accurately adjusted and hel securelylockecl in ndjusted position relative to the crown blocks.
7 Thegcrown block its at present constructed compr ses WOOdED. timbers arranged crosswise of the'wooclen crown at the top of the derrick frame endto said crownthloclr' the" bearing boxes'for the multiplicity oi'rlerricli sheaves ore bolted. with the result that-es the strains of the cables Working thereorer are placed onto the benring boxes the some sink or bite into the wooilen supijiorting surfaces and the same get out of alinement, resulting in the sheaves tilting siolewise and causing an untrue running of the cables. This necessitates the sheave boxes being 1'6: pea-teclly blocked up--so to speck-4111 or or to secure proper elinement, and. as the boxes are bolted directly to the ivooclen crown blocks it is e diiiicult matter to vary. the
adjustment thereof. Again, as the wooen.
crown blocks are not uniform, some boing; softer than others it follows that one will give under the severe strains to which they are subjected quicker than the others, thus requiring constant attention to maintain the proper alinement of the sheave boxes. It is these recognized defects which the present invention is designed to obviate,- and by so doing" not only materially prolonging the life of the crown blocks, but providing for the perm mm.- alinement of the sheave block anol "facilitating the ndjustment'to vary the position thereof relative to the said blocks.
To comprehend the invention reference being broken away;
is secured a longitudinally dish by the corrugateo or should. he lied to the occoni mnying sheets of dmwings, wherein-- Figure l is a. plan View of the crown blocks with the derrick sheaves positioned thereon. Fig. 2 is a. side elevation of the parts disclosed by Figv 1 of the drawings, one of the crown blocks and the oil derrick Fig. 3 is an enlargecl broken side elevation of one of the crown Mocks, illustrating one of the benrin! blocks held thereto and the sheave in pos'fiion. Fig. -i is a cross sectional View illustrating one of the sheaves, the lie-tiring boxes there for, and the crown blocks to which the said. boxes are udjusfdbly held. 7
in the drawings, the numeral 1 is ucecl to designate the upright timbers of the oil erriclz, 2 the strengthening strips, and 3 the built up crown timbers. On this crown are secured the transversely disposed metal I-beams i, on which rest the spececl trons \ei'sely extending motel crown blocks 5, which, like the beams 4-, ore couiposeil of Ply-3811115. To the face of each crown block 3 metallic face or wear plate 6, which is fol 'ied'with e (love-toiled channel or {groove 4 hich're ceives the heads of the securing holts 8 for the sheave boxes 9, which are held thereto by the securing nuts it journals of the series of sheaves b to the bearing boxeslby the bone. ii. li ietween the spnccol crown hlochs Work the series of (lerricl: sheaves end it, of which the ones 11% ei-econnnoniy' termed the calf Wheel crown" pulley one Liesignoted by the numeral 13 to, crown pulley and the one nicrherl lfi' us the send line pulley. I The face or Wear plates it are corrugated or fluterl longituclih"ll" to "toifi'm e. series of seats or indentations-i5, "with which register and interlock the transverse ribs lfi'formecl iinteii iincler surface of the bearing boxes 9. sothat Wheii the bolts 8 are tlglllifillfid'llP the boxes will be securely locked in their ecljustei position and held against movement or slippege rela tive to the crown blocks. the fees or Wear plates 6 being conshierecl and treated es the upper surfeceofthe crown blocks. To provide against lateral play or moven'icnt ot the bearing" b0 es, each box is formed with 8. depending tongue llr'vhich fits snugly with in-the upper contracted portion of? the longithe wear plates of the crown blocks is obtained, the life of the derrick structure is materially prolonged,
-. the Weather, which prolongs the derrick structure over those utilizing wooden tudinally disposed channel or groove 7 of the crown blocks, Fig. 4 of the drawings. Under this arrangement the bearing boxes are securely held against longitudinal and lateral movements, and as the croi'vn'bloclcs are composed-oi inetal there can be no settling or sinliage oi" the bearing boxes into the crown blocks, hence the boxes 'annot move out of alineinent under the pulling strains placed onto the cable sheaves. T he aliaeinent ofthe sheaves is thus-maintained, and inasmuch as the crown blocks are constructed of metal they are not materially affected by exposure to life of the crown blocks.
To change the adjustment of the sheaves relative to the crown blocks, it is only required to loosen the securing bolts 8, when the position of the bearing boxes may be quickly varied by moving each hearing for the SllGflVe to be changed in the desired direction to the required position, with the assurance that when the securing'bolts are tightened up the bearing boxes will be in proper alinement 15v the use of the described invention pertectalineinent of the bearing boxes for the sheaves is obtained, the excessive Wear and tilting of the sheaves which follows from the use of Wooden crown blocks is overcome, quick adjustn'ient for the bearing boxes and, likewise, the ready attachment thereof to and the upkeep reduced to a minimum, due to the fact that the expense incident to the constant repairs of the Wooden crown blocks is dispensed with.
Haring thus described the invention What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters 1 atent is- An adjustable bearing for ell drilling rigs, comprising a pair of parallel spaced members, transversely corrugated Wear plates held to the upper surface of each of said members and extending the full length thereof, saidplates'being )rovided on their upper surface and throng" out their length with a longitudinally extending dove-tailed slot, bearing other on said plates and forming a pair, and said pair carrying: a sheave, said hearing boxes formed on their under faces with transverse corrugations to register with the corrugations of said wear plates, lugs tending from the mulersurtace of said hearing boxes for projection into said dovetailed slots, and headed securing" bolts slidably mounted in said slots and the shanks thereof extending through said bearing boxes for detachably securing; the bearing boxes to the wear plates.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES T. HALL.
