ln accordance with the invention, the cross head comprises a body or boxing composed ot side plates connected together at one end ot the cross head by the piston rod socket and at the other end ot the cross head by the pivot bolt et the corresponding pitman bearing.
The side plates, which may have parallel top and bottom edges, engage top and bottoni gibs and between the side plates and gibs are connected wedge strips. one wedge strip, which is of tai-torni, being interposed between the upper edges ol the side plates and the uppermost gibs. and the other wedge strip being composed ot the side plates and the lowermost gibs.
Between the upper pair ot gibs and also between the lower pair ot gibs is a taper key tor spreading the gibs ci each pair apart and provision is made Jfor connecting the taper key to the gJ-shaped wedge member associated with it. in order to draw the parts up tight.
The side plates near their top and bottom ed are traversed by bolts connecting them together. and these bolts where traversing` the side plates are tapered longitudinally, so that they may snugly lit the parts they ra verse.
The gibs where traversed by the bolts are oli web and flange formation, while the bodies oli the gibs are made heavy to provide ample hearing against the parallel slide bars along which the cross head travels.
rllhe invention also contemplates additional ineans for compensating for wear as will hereinafter appear, and provision is made Yfor taking up the wear both laterally and longitudinally oli the cross head so that the gibs may be adjusted from time to time and the cross head will run smoothly with out play, thus greatly prolonging the li'lie ot the cross head and particularly of the gibs and contributing to smooth, noiseless action.

Referring to the drawings, there shown in Figs. l and 2 a cross head A, to ne end of which there is secared a piston rod B by means of a socket 1 and the rod is made tast to the socket l by a wedge 2. The socket l is or may be in one piece with side plates 3 between which the socket 2 is cast. Traversing the side plates 3, near their other ends,

The pivot bolt 4 is formed with a taper head Z having a seat 8 in the orresponding side plate 3 and taper shank 9 in the same side plate. The body of the bolt extends from the taper seat 9 to the other side plate where it is provided with a taper shank 10 passing through a taper seat 11 in the second side plate and beyond the second side plate the bolt 4 has a threaded continuation 12 to which is applied a nut 13 held in place by a cotter pin 14 or other suitable means.
F ast to the plates 3 and extending between the plates at the upper and lower edges thereof, are pairs of gibs 15, each composed of a block-litre body member 1G overhangthe ends and along one edge having a longitudinal taper seat 17 from the inner side of which a flange 18 projects opposite to the body 1G. Perpendicular kto the flange 18 on the side thereof remote from the seat 17 is a series of ars 19 of progressively different lengths, the ears of one gib being opposite to the ears of the companion gib, so as to leave a space bet veen tween them with the spaces in line diagonal to the length of the cross head, as best shown in Fig. 4. rlhe flange 18 between the ears 19 has perforations 20, traversed by bolts 21, which bolts also traverse the edge portion of the side plates One end of each bolt 2l is formed into a head 22, adjacent to which the bolt has a taper shank 28. rllhe end of each bolt 21 remote from the taper portion 23 and where it passes through the opposite side plate and perforation in the opposite gib is tapered, as indicated. at 24 and beyond the portion 24 has a screw-threaded continuation 25 'terminating in a squared end 2G. Applied to the tl'ireaded portion 25 are loelc nuts 27. The mid portion of the bolt 21 is eccentric to the longitudinal axis of the bolt, so that when the bolt .is turned, there is a respective movement between the parts traversed by the bolt due to the eccentricity of the mid portion of the bolt, so that the various portions are adjusted by the turning of the bolt with respect to the parts engaged thereby.
Introduced between the taper seats 1.7 of the opposite gibs 1G and the like edges of the side plates z are matching legs of tl-shaped wedges 29, the legs being joined at the thicker ends by a yoke 80 having a perforation 31 midway between the two legs. rllhere is also provided a key 82, shown sep arately in F ig. 6 and` in plan` view in Fig.
4, and appearing in cross section in Fig. 3, this key conforming more or less to the longitudinal shape of the gib ani. having along one edge a widened portion 33 in which is produced a longitudinal slot 34. At one end .of the widened portion 83, there is formed an eye 35 perpendicular to one face of the key. The key is introduced between opposite gibs and engaged by the ears 19 between which it is lodged and the perfor-ations 2O are arranged on opposite sidesof the slot 34, so that the bolts 21 when traversing the perforations 2() also traverse the slot 34.
Encircling one of the bolts, say that bolt nearest to the yole of the double .fredge 29, is the eye of an eye bolt 3i', the shank of which eye bolt passes through the ear and through the perforation 31 of the yoke 30 and has then applied to it loclr nuts 38. On the side of the ear 35 remote from the yoke 30, the eye bolt 37 has another nut 39 applied thereto, so that the double wedge 29 may be drawn up tight and forced between the ears 19 of the gibs and locked in the adjusted position. it the saine time, the lrey 32, which is in the form of a plate having a slight longitudinal. taper toward the ear 85, bears upon the adjacent ends of the ears 19, thereby tending to force the gibs apart until separation of the gibs is prevented by the engagement of the side plates with the heads 23 of the bolts 21 and with the nuts 2T at the opposite ends of the bolts 21. Further adjustment is provided for by the employment of shims 4() between the inner faces of the top and bottom portions of the side plates and the outer faces of the flanges 18.
The gibs of each pair have matching rabbets 41 to receive top and bottom parallel guide bars 42 permitting the cross head 'to reciprocate under the impulses of the piston rod B and thereby impart motion to vthe pitman 6 in the usual manner.
lWhen the cross head is assembled, all looseness is talren up by adjusting the bolts 21 to spread the gibs so that they embrace the guide bars 42 and are moved one away from the' other causing a neat lit between the bars 42 and the rabbets At the same time, the double wedges 255 take up any looseness between the side plates 3 and the inconjunction with the shims 49. Moreover, the taper form of the wrist pin 4, where passing through the side plates 3, provides for taking up any looseness which might otherwise occur or be due to wear between the pitman 6 and the cross head.
After the cross head has been in use for a while, wear occurs and then it is necessary to readjust the several parts, which adjustment is facilitated by the adjustments for which provision is made and such adjustments can be performed with great facility.
In order to adapt the invention to a cross head in which eccentric bolts are used in the absence ot the twin or double Wedge, the structure shovvn in Figs. 9 to ll may be employed. ln such case, eccentric bolts 2l, one of which is shown in l0 may be used. Each bolt 21a between the taper portion 24 and the threaded extension 25 is provided ,iith a squared portion to re ceive .a Washer lil bearing against the outer tace of the respective side plate and the washer del has a central passage ot square contour or of any other non-circular contour correspondingto the non-circular portion of the bolt. Instead ot taking up side lateral play with shims7 as indicated in Fig. il, the arrangenient shown in Fig. 'l2 may be employed and is the preterable Jform. The gibs 1G in the showing of Fig. l2 have each a beveled undercul tace lo and the side plates 3 are similarly undercut and beve-led, shown at il, so that when the key 32 and the bolts 2l are aiiljusted, both the up and down and the side play are taken up simultaneously.

it. ln a cross head, an elongated gib structure comprising tivo parts, each having one edge provided with a rabbet to receive a guide bar along which the cross head travels and the opposite edge formed with an inset longitudinal llange having laterally extended ears projecting therefrom with the ears ol progressively ditlerent lengths from one end ot the gib toward the other, and the gibs being arranged in pairs with the ears matching` and separated to torni a channel between them.
