T 0 all whom it may concern Be. it known that 1, WILLIAM Wnsn a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets for Railway-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to water-closets for railway carriages, and its object is to provide a construction which will adapt the closet for use at all times, whether the car is in motion between stations, standing still at a station, or passing through a town or city.

' Nearly'all municipalities along the'line of a railgoad have established ordinancesby which the railway companies are compelled to lock the doors of the water closets on their cars, while a train is moving within the limits of the municipality or standing at astation, and it is obvious that this closing of the closets is of great inconvenience to-the passengers, especially when the car or train is delayed a long time at a station.

By the use of my invention the railroad companies may avoid all danger of violating the ordinances above referred to, and the passengers on their trains will at no time he denied access to the closets.

My invention consists with this end in view, in providing a receptacle which may be adapted from a point within the car, and preferably outside the compartment in which the closet-bowl is installed, to retain the matter passing through the outlet of the bowl. This receptacle is of sufficient size to receive this matter during a considerable length of time, and it is constructed to immediately discharge its contents when'desired. I i

A plunger 17 pivotally connected with thelever l extends loosely through an opening in the'rim of the bowl to be engaged by the seat 5; so that the weight of an occupant thereof will cause a movement of the lever about its fulcrum and a consequent opening movement of the valve 12, which by means of the spring is returned to its normal closing position thevmoment the bowl seat is relieved from the weight of its occupant.
