Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented @ct. 8, 1914.;
Application filed April 1 1812. Serial No. 889,856. g
T 0 all whom it may concern Be. it known that 1, WILLIAM Wnsn a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets for Railway-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to water-closets for railway carriages, and its object is to provide a construction which will adapt the closet for use at all times, whether the car is in motion between stations, standing still at a station, or passing through a town or city.
' Nearly'all municipalities along the'line of a railgoad have established ordinancesby which the railway companies are compelled to lock the doors of the water closets on their cars, while a train is moving within the limits of the municipality or standing at astation, and it is obvious that this closing of the closets is of great inconvenience to-the passengers, especially when the car or train is delayed a long time at a station.
By the use of my invention the railroad companies may avoid all danger of violating the ordinances above referred to, and the passengers on their trains will at no time he denied access to the closets.
My invention consists with this end in view, in providing a receptacle which may be adapted from a point within the car, and preferably outside the compartment in which the closet-bowl is installed, to retain the matter passing through the outlet of the bowl. This receptacle is of sufficient size to receive this matter during a considerable length of time, and it is constructed to immediately discharge its contents when'desired. I i
Means are provided to efi'ectivelyprevent the emanation of odor from the contents of the receptacle =1nto the car, a s mple con:
trivance is applied to the receptacle to prevent freezing of matter contained therein, and a valve-controlled Water-pIpe 18 connected to flush the receptacle for'the purpose of expediting the discharge of its contents and thoroughly cleaning its walls afterthe car to which it is applied has left a station.
An embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which,
l igure 1 represents a side elevationof a railroad carriage, partially in section to which. my invention is applied. Fig.2, a vertical section taken along the line '22 Fig. 1, and, Fig. 3, a fragmentarysectio'nal view of the receptacle in which the matter charge-d from the bowl 4 and the bottom of this tank slopes toward a discharge-pipe 8 located at one of its ends'in axial alinement with the outlet of the bowl.
point adjacent'the roof of the carriage'for the escape of gases, and a valve-controlled connection 10 is adapted to connect the tank with a conveniently located source of water. to flush the same whenever desired.
The outlet- 6 of the closet-bowl is nor- A vent-pipe 9"extends from the tank-to a mally closed by means of a flap-valve 12,
which, when the seat of th'e bowl is unoccupied, is maintained in its closed position by the action of a spring 13 upon the arm of a-lever 14,,which by means of a push rod 15 is connected with a crank-arm 16 on the valve.
A plunger 17 pivotally connected with thelever l extends loosely through an opening in the'rim of the bowl to be engaged by the seat 5; so that the weight of an occupant thereof will cause a movement of the lever about its fulcrum and a consequent opening movement of the valve 12, which by means of the spring is returned to its normal closing position thevmoment the bowl seat is relieved from the weight of its occupant.
The'discharge pipe 8 0f the receptacle 7 is likewise provided with a. valve 18 whose crank-arm 19 is bymeans of a rod 20 con- "nected with a lever 21'which istfulcrumed',
as at 22, outside the compartment 3, whereby the position of the valve may be adjusted by the attendant of thecarwithout entering .thecloset; I To prevent freezing of the contents of the tank, I have provided a pipe .23 which 1s onto coiled around the discharge pine 8, and. which may connect with the oci or of c Lit? i10- comotive to which the carriage is .ttacherl, or with any other suitable source oif'calo- Ill'lC fluid.
The outlet 6 of: the bowl 1 is normally closed by the valve 1:2 to he openel only when the scat is ooonpiecl, but the disoipe 3 olithe tank "8' is closed only en the carriage is standing st ll or 5 within. the limits a innniczpa such a case, we attendant oi 010 as i" 1e valve 18 o pagan lei 521:) and. the matter (lepc (l closet bowl. which otherwise would. pass through the alined openings 6 and 8 clircc the ground is now i'etaineci in the tank l'.
inasmuch as the boWLontlet is innnediatelj closed when the occupant of th closet rises from the seam and as the gases ema-' ,11ate l,from the contents of the receptacle,
