WORK'MANfi SCAFFOL'D To all whom itma i concern: I Be'it known that I, HORMISDAB E. BRU- nnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residingat St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Workmens Scafi'olds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in workmens scaffolds designed particularly for exteriorsupport upon window sills, its construction which will be easy of adjustment to different thicknesses and constructions of walls and win dow sills, and which will beparticularly strong and rigid when supported in position for, use;
'To this end the invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herelnafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my improved scaffold arranged in connection with a window sill, showing the window sill and wall in section; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the scaffold in A represents a Referring to the drawings,
of the outside window sill, and B the face wall. C represents the face of the inside wall. The supporting frame D of the platform E is formed with downwardly extend ing feet-'2 to rest upon the outer ledge. Having pivotal connection 3 with the outer end of the platform framework are downwardly extending arms 4, the lower ends of said I arms being connected by toggle links 5 and 6 with the brackets 7 slidable 1n slots 8 in the sides of the platform frame. The arms 4 and toggle links 5 and 6 with brackets 7 are duplicated on opposite sides of the scaffold,
and preferablyconnected as by a cross bar toward the 'plat- Projecting upwardly and form E from the inwardly projecting sides of the platform framework 2 are the arms 10. A cross bar 11 connects the arms 10 and supports the frame 12, the-cross bar 11 con -stituting a hinge connection between the frame-12 and platform. The frame 12 inchides a central bar 13 forming a support for a slidablebr'acketl l through which is screw threaded a bolt 15.
.In use, the platform will bepositioned upon the window sill, as shown in Fig. 1
brace rods, corresponding 14 will, of course, be set at the proper position upon the bar .13 to adjust the scaflold to the particular construction of wall and sill. he screwing inward of the bolt 15 to tighten the so me against the-adjacent wall, will pull the lower ends of the braced toggle arms tightly against the outer wall to hold the platform'in position; The slidable brackets 7, having pivotal connection with the arms 4 and links 5 and't, will assist in collapsing the scaffold, as shown in Fig. 2.
In those scatlolds of the prior art which are known to me, the outer bearing of the supporting structure against the wall is accomplished by the ends of the diagonal to applicants ele-- ment l, coming in contact with the outer face of the wall. It. will be noted that in the present structure toggle lever 5 is provided with 'an enlargement below the pivoted connection thereof with the brace arm 4 which bears against the outer face of the wall, while the upper end of the toggle lever 6 is connected to the carriage or bracket 7. An additional function of the brackets 7, then, is to permit such necessary play of the upper end of the toggle, when the latter is extended,- as is necessary to properly position the, supporting structure in its unfolded cure a proper footing against the outer face of the wall regardless of any irregularities or obstructions that may exist thereon.
As will be evident ll secure a construction which is easily adapted to different types of sill and thicknesses of wall and in addition one that is partimilarlystrong and rigid when supported for use, as shown in Fig. l, and collapsible into a compact condition, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention:
1. A window scallold comprising in com bination, a. platform, a "frame supporting said platform, an adjustable means carried by said frame in position to be set in contact with the inner face oi? a "wall, an extensible means carried by said frame for bracing the latter against the outer face 01" the Wall, said the free end of thetlti llli
'ili:
4 condition and to permit the lower ends oi-the levers 5 to se extensible means consisting of rearwardly extending braces pivoted to said frame tog gle connections between the free ends 0 said braces and said frame, longitudinally slidable brackets carrying the freme ends of said toggle connections and bearing-feetmeans carried by said frame for bracing thelatter against the outer face of the wall, said extensible means consisting of foldable toggles having a sliding connection with said frame, bearing feet on the lower ends of said toggles for contact with a wall-face, and braces extending from the lower ends of said toggles to the outer ends of said frame.- ESQ-A window scaffold comprising in-com binetion, a platform, a frame supporting said platform, on adjustable means cerried 25 by said frame in position to-be set in contact with the inner face of a wnll,"an"extensible meenscarried by Sitld frame for bracing the latter against the outer face of the Wall, said extensible means consisting of hrzicesq pivoted ac to the outer end of 'saidfraine, and extending to points adjacent the :outenwall face, toggle levers havingithci'r lower ends connected to the free ends of: said braces, hearing' feet on said toggle levers for" contact with the wall face, and brackets carried by the upper ends of said ltoggiehlevers and having longitudinally slidahle "connections with 'snid-iirame. i
