COMBINATION-LADDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER C. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination ladder, primarily intended for use by artisans, such as painters, paper hangers, etc, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a step ladder with means whereby its feet may be adjusted vertically so as to adapt itself to the different elevations of stairs or the like, the step ladder being still further provided with a vertically extending adjustable straight ladder member adapted for a support for a scaffold.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination ladder constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same positioned upon a flight of steps, the straight ladder being removed from the step ladder. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a straight ladder positioned upon the step ladder. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a support which may be attached to the top of the straight ladder. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail. sectional'view illustrating the means of supporting the platform upon the step ladder and adjustably securing the straight ladder to the said platform. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the top of the step ladder illustrating the anti-frictional bearings and the straight ladder engaging the anti-frictional bearings.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the step ladder. This step ladder is constructed in the ordinary manner, being provided with a top 2 from which extends a step ladder proper 3, the ladder being provided with a plurality of The numeral 6 designates the second member of the step ladder. This member 6 is pivotally connected directly below the top 2 as at 7 and the said member 6 is provided with a plurality of steps or rounds 8. Connecting the members 3 and 6 upon both of their sides are the foldable braces 9 and 10. These braces 9 and 10 are each pivotally connected with the sides of the members 3 and 6 and have their central portions provided with a carriage joint 11. The steps of both the ladder members 3 and 6 are arranged in parallel relation with each other and the top 2 of the said members is provided with a longitudinal slot or cut away portion 12. Secured to the transverse walls provided by the longitudinally extending slot 12 of the top 2 are roller bearings 13 and 14, the purpose of which will presently be set forth. 7
The numeral 15 designates the ladder extension. This extension 15 is primarily adapted to be fitted upon the ladder section 6, but may, of course, be attached to the section 3 if desired. The member 15 comprises a rectangular section 16 having a plurality of substantially U-shaped castings 17 se cured thereto. These castings 17 are adapted to be slid upon the lower portion of the ladder member and are spaced a sufiicient distance apart to pass the rounds 8 or the steps 5. The extension 16 is further provided with a substantially U-shaped casting 18. This casting 18 has its inner face provided with a rounded depression 19, the same being adapted to engage the lowermost round 8 or the lowermost brace 5 of the step ladder sections. The feet of each of the ladder sections are provided with a coating of some suitable material, such as rubber so as to prevent the scratching of the floor upon which the ladder is used and the steps 3 of the said ladder may be also provided with rubber plates to prevent the slipping of the artisan using the ladder.
The numeral 20 designates what I term the platform of the device. This platform 20 comprises a pair of spaced arms 21 and 22, the same having their extremities formed with suitable catches 23 and 24 whereby the said platform may be rigidly and securely connected with the steps 4 and the rounds 8 of the step ladder 1. The platform 20 is also provided with a centrally arranged connecting bar or rod 25, and connected with the said rod 25 is a pair of spaced substantially U-shaped supports 26.
The numeral 27 designates what I term the straight ladder for the device. This ladder 27 is constructed in the ordinary manner and has its side bars of a width and thickness suflicient to snugly pass through the opening 12 of the top 2 and to be engaged by the antifrictional rollers 13. The ladder 27 is supported in an adjustable position through the medium of the U-shaped supporting members 26 which engage the rounds 28 of the said ladder adjacent the side rails 21 thereof. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the ladder 27 may be raised or lowered to any desired height by simply adjusting the rounds to the U- shaped supports 26. The top of the ladder 29 may be provided with a shelf 30, the same having its transverse edges formed with depressions 31 which are adapted to snugly fit over the side rails 29 of the ladder 27 and to rest upon the uppermost round 28 thereof. The shelf 30 may be provided with a plurality of openings 82, the latter forming holding devices for tools, such as pliers, hammers, etc, when the device is employed by electricians. Any of the rounds of the ladder 27 may be employed for the reception of boards 33 which form a scaffold for the workmen.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is In a device for the purpose set forth, a step ladder comprising a pair of pivoted sections and having a top therefor, an eX- tension member for one of the sections, a platform having catches connected with the rounds of each of the sections, said platform comprising a pair of side members having catches, a transverse member connected with the side members, a hook pivotally connected with the transverse memher, the top of the ladder being provided with an opening, a straight ladder adapted to be i erted within the said opening, and the rounds of the straight ladder adapted to be engaged by the hook of the platform.
