Be it known that I, GEORGE P. VVIGGINTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the followingis a specification. I

This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders.

My present improvements are particularly designed by me for embodim'entin a binder of the type shown in United States Letters Patent, #1,010,566, issued'to me December 5, 1911, or my application for Letters Patent filed March 3rd, 1913, Ser. No. 751,914, my present application being a continuation of that application as to matters common to both.

The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet holder, an improved adjusting mechanism. Second, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder which is capable of very rapid manipulation to permit the insertion or removal of the sheets and one in which the sheets are securely held and the mechanism is simple and compact.

Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated part of this specification, in which:

Figure I is a detail inside plan of a structure embodying the features of my invention, with the covers extended, the sheets being shown in an upright position for convenience in illustration. Fig. 11 is an inverted detail of the rack bar and the adjusting slide. Fig. III is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 33 of Fig. 11. Fig. IV is a perspective view' of the adjusting slideremoved from the rack bar.

Referring to the drawing, the covers 1 and 2 in the embodiment of my invention illustrated, are substantially the same in structure as that of my patent hereinbefore referred to. The clamping bars 3 are pivotally connectedto the covers by means of hinge members 4 which project from "the 5 bars, the pintles 5 being shown by dotted cover 2. The adjusting member is held in its adjusted positions on the rack by means of the pawl 10 which is pivoted at 11 to coact with the rack bar. The pawl is provided, with a finger piece 12 by means of which it can be thrown into engaging or disengaging position, the U-shaped spring 13 being adapted to hold the pawl yieldingly in either position. For ordinary purposes, the binding strips 7 may be drawn sufiiciently tight by grasping the adjusting member 7 which is provided with suitable finger holds 14: on its front edge. lVhen, however, it is desired to tighten the binding strips further than is convenient to do by grasping the adjusting member with the fingers, I provide an adjusting slide 15 on the under side of which is mounted a pinion 16 adapted to coact with the rack bar 9. The slide is provided with rack engaging fingers orlugs 17 disposed oppositely of the pinion, the lugs being struck down from the body of the slide and being arranged so that they may be slipped over the rack to engage the rear edge thereof, as shown in the drawing, the pinion swinging downin front of the rack into mesh with its teeth. The slide is provided with a shoe 18 at one side ofthe pinion,

which slides along on the rearwall of the cover chamber or recess.

The spindle 19 of the adjusting slide is edge of the adjusting member 7, carrying it along on the rack bar. The adjusting memher is held in its adjusted position by means of the pawl. The ad usting member 1s released by disengaging the pawl.

I have illustrated and described my im-' provements in detail in the form in which I.

have embodied the same for market. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to adapt and embody the same as may be most desirable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I

1. In a temporary binder, the combination of a binding member, a rack bar, an adjusting member for said binding member mounted on said bar, means for holding said adjusting member in its adjusted position on said bar, a slide provided with downwardly projecting bar engaging lugs, whereby the slide is removably engaged with said bar, a pinion mounted on said slide to coact with said bar when the slide is engaged, and a finger piece for rotating said pinion.

2. In a temporary hinder, the combination of a binding member, a rack bar, an

adjusting member for said binding member mounted on said bar, means for holding said adjusting member in its adjusted position on said bar, means for actuating said adjusting member comprising a slide removably engaged with said rack and a pinion carried by said slide and adapted to mesh with said rack when the slide is engaged therewith, and means for turning said pinion. 1

3. In a temporary binder, the combinatio of a binding member, a rack bar, an adjusting member for said binding member mounted on said bar, means for holding said adjusting member in its adjusted position on said bar, meansfor actuating said adjusting member comprising a slide removably engaged with said rack, and means carried by said slide and coacting with said rack for ad justing the slide on the rack and through it, said adjusting member.
