To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLEY J. R101-mno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisburg, in the county of Grant, State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ItIorseshoeCalks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.

This invention is directed to improvements in horse shoe calks, and has for its object to 'provide a device of this character which may be quickly and conveniently bolted to the usual horse shoe.

A 'further object of the invention is to construct the calks in such a manner that the same may be attached either to the toc or heels of the shoe.

A still further object is to construct a calli which will lessen the jar incident to the shoe coming in Contact with the pavement.

IVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the horse shoe showing the same equipped with the calks. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the shoe. Fig. 4t is a detail perspective view of one of the calks.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a horse shoe of the conventional form, and 2 a casing having` the attaching flanges 3 through which are passed bolts for securing the casing to the shoe 1. The casing 2 is divided into compartments L by a partition 5, said compartments each having a bore 6 opening thereinto.

The compartments 1 are rectangular in cross section, and adapted for sliding move ment therein are the heads 7 of the calks 8, said heads having` rectangular recesses 9 formed in their upper surfaces, in which are supported rubber blocks 10 which serve to cushion the jar upon the calk when the same moves upwardly in the compartments 'il in contact with the under surface of the shoe 1. By forming the compartment and heads rectangular in cross section rotation of the calks is prevented, thereby preventing injury to the springs 13. Depending from the head 7 are shanks 11, said Shanks being screw-threaded at their lower ends, and upon which are threaded burs 12, said burs being adapted to contact directly with the ground. Surromiding the lower ends of the shanls 11 are coil springs 18, the upper terminals of which are seated in the annular grooves let formed upon the bottom of the casing 2, the lower terminals of said springs resting upon the burs 12.

The casing' 15 is constructed in a manner similar to the casing 2 with the exception that it is slight-ly curved so as to conform to the curvature of the toe of the shoe 1. r1`he compartments 1G of the casing 15 are substantially rhomboidal in cross section likewise the heads 17 of the calks.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that all jar to the horse in placing the foot upon the pavement is eliminated and at the same time the calks will prevent the objectionable sliding and slipping.

Nhat is claimed is The combination with a horse shoe, of a` casing secured thereto, `lid casing being di vided into compartments rectangular in cross section, calks comprising rectangular heads arranged for sliding movement', within the compartments, shanks depending from the heads and movable in the bores formed in the bottom of the casing, said heads having recesses formed therein, cushion blocks seated in said recesses and adapted to contact with the shoe when the heads move upwardly in the casing, burs secured to the lower ends of the Shanks, springs moiinted exteriorly of the casing and interposed between the bottom of the casing and burs, as and for the purpose set forth.
