a citizen of the United States, residing atA` enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates yto horses'hoes and horseshoe-pads; and the object thereof is to provide improved devices of this class by means ofwhich the feet of a horse will be protected against injury and prevented from slipping, a further object being to provide a horseshoe and pad therefor which completely covers the bottom of the feet and which is provided with means for Ventilating the feet when the shoe and pad are in use 5 and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a horseshoe provided with a pad constructed as hereinafter described and claimed. The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of a horse'- shoe provided with my improved pad;'l1`ig.V 2, a top plan view of the pad removed fr orn the shoe; Fig. 3, a top plan viewv of one part" of the pad; Fig. 4, a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a detail of the construction.

In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 6 a horseshoe in which is placed a pad 8, said pad being so formed as to entirely till the shoe and to project backwardly beyond the ends of the sides of the shoe, as shown at 9, although this feature is not an essential element of my invention, as the sides of the shoe may be extended backward-ly as far as the pad, if desired. The shoe 6 is also shown slightly. longer on one side than on the other, the object of this Iconstruction being to weight one side ofthe toot more than the other when necessary.

tion of the pad and also the shoe, and the body portion 7b of the pad'consists, preferably, of rubber, rubber and canvas, or other suitable material and is provided with a top flange 7c, which ts between the sides of the shoe and the top portion 7a of the pad. The central portion of the pad is open, as shown at 7d, and placed therein is a hollow cushion 8', composed of rubber, rubber and canvas, vor similar material and which is closed at the bottom, open at the top, and covered by the top portions 7 of the pad, which is composed of leather, as herein before described.

In Fig. 3 of the draWingsI have shown the body of the pad with the leather covering or top 7 removed, and the body portion of the pad is provided with a groove 9 around the central opening 7, in which are formed perforations lO, which communicate with corresponding perforations 1l in the top portion 7a ofthe pad, and said top portion 7a of the pad is also provided centrally with perforations 12, which communicate with a space within the central cushion 8', and around the groove 9 in the body portion 7b of the pad are formed perforations 1,3, which communicate with corresponding perforations 14 in the top portion 7at of the pad. The body portion 7b of the pad is also provided in the ,front portion thereof with a calk-holder l5, and two similar calkholders 15 are set into the rear portions of the pad, and each of these calk-holders consists of a conical body portion 16, of rubber, rubber and canvas, or similar material, and

a central c'alk 17, of steel, Which passes therethrough, and the said calk-holders and calks are held in place by nuts 18, countersunk in the Atop of the body portion of the pad, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and into which the calks 17 are screwed. These calk-holders and calks are intended for use only when it is slippery or when the groundisfrozen, and they may be removed or placed in position whenever desired, it being understood that the removal of or the placing of the same in position must be accomplished before the shoe is put on the foot, at which time the top por-tion 7 of the pad may be separated from the body portion of the pad, if desired.

The shoe is secured to the foot in the usual manner by nails driven through suitable holes at 19, and this operation will also secure both IOO parts of the pad to the foot, as will be readily understood; but the top4 portion 7a of the pad may be permanently secured to the body portion of the pad, if desired.

The various holes or openings 10 and 13- and the holes or openings S in the central cushion S, togethet'with the holes or.open ings 12 in the central portion of the top part of the pad, serve to fully ventilate the foot at all times, and the groove 9 in the topl of the body portion of the pad operates to prevent the airvholes or openings lO and 11 from becoming clogged.

By means of my improved pad the feet of a horse will be securely protected at all times, the pad serving to fully cushion and protect the foot, and the animal will also be prevented from slipping when the ground is frosty or frozen.

My invention `is not limited to the means herein shown and described for holding the detachable calks in the pad, as many other devices may be employed for this purpose; nor is my inventionlimited to the form. and construction of detachable calks 'as herein described nor to the material of which the same is composed, and many changes in and modifications of the general construction of my improved horseshoe-pad and the various parts thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pad for horseshoes, comprising a central body portion adapted to fill the shoe, a top portion of leather which overlaps the central body portion of the pad andthe shoe, the body portion of the pad being also provided centrally with a cushion which is covered by the top portion of the pad, said top portion of the pad and said body portion and the oentral cushion being perforated, substantially as shown and described.

2. A horseshoe-pad composed of rubber or similar material and adapted to fill the shoe and provided With a top portion of leather which overlaps the pad and the shoe, the body portion of the pad being also provided with detachable @all-holders and calks, substantially asshown and described.

3. Ahorseshoe-pad comprising abody portion which is adapted to till the shoe, a top portion which overlaps the body portion and the shoe, a central cushion which is also covered by the top portion, said .body portionbeing provided in the top-thereofwith a groove around said cushion, and said top and body portions with perforations which communicate with said groove, substantially as shown and described.

4. A horseshoe-pad comprisinga body portion which is adapted to fill the shoe, a top portion which overlaps the body portion and the shoe, a central cushion which is also covered by the top portion, said body portion being providedin the top thereof with a groove around said cushion, and said top, and body portions with perforations which communicate with said groove, the said pad beingalso provided just Within the shoe With perforations subst-antially as shown and described.

A horseshoe-pad comprising a body portion which is adapted to till the shoe, a top portionwhich overlaps the body portion and the shoe, a central cushion which is also covered by the top portion, said bodyportion being provided in the top thereof with agroove around said cushion, and said top and body portions with perforations which communicate Withsaid groove, the said pad beingalso provided just Within the shoe with perforations, and the top portion of the shoe and the central cushion being also perforated, substantially as shown and described.

6. A horseshoe-pad provided with elastic and detachable calli-holders which are set thereinto, and calks detachably secured in said holders, substantially as shown and de scribed.

7. A horseshoe-pad composed of top and bottom portions, the bottom portion being provided with agroovein the top thereof and both of said portions being provided with perforations or openings which communicate with said groove, substantially as shown and described.
