HORSE-COLLAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 870,392 dated September 27 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BERNHARD H. HEL- MING, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsiinhave invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-0ollars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My improvements relate to that class of horse-collars which are adapted to go about the neck of a horse; and the object of the invention is to form and construct the collar with such a peculiar and permanent shape as adapts it especially for use on those horses having prominent high shoulder-blades, a breed-of which horses having such prominent shoulder-blades is. now coming into use quite extensively in this country.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear of my improved collar. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same collar, outside parts being broken away to exhibit interior parts. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of one side of the collar on line X X of Fig. 1.

The pads A A and the small roll B are constructed of an outside leather case, 0, and are stuffed with straw, D, or similar material, as is usual with this class of collars. The collar is made continuous about the neck of the horse, the two ends of the roll and the pad-case being united at the top within a leather shield, E. At a part of the pad, F, at about one-third of the distance from the top to the bottom of the collar, on both sides, I draw the inner surface of the pad back into itself, forming a recess in the pad at F, whereby room is given for the point of the high shoulder-blade of the horses mentioned to have easy movements,while the pressure of the collar is against the shoulder or breast of the horse at a point lower down on the pad. (Indicated, generally, by the location of the letters AA in Fig. 1.) To draw and hold the inner surface of the pad at the point F back, as mentioned, I insert a stay-rod, G, of iron, in the collar behind the straw in the pad opposite the part F, and by means of cords H H, passed around the rod G and secured on the inner surface of the case of the pad by tying them over the tufts or keys I I, the inner surface of that part of the pad is drawn back and tion.

It will be seen that by this peculiar construction of the pad of the collar a sufficient recess is formed therein to allow a very prominent high shoulder-blade to have free movement therein, thereby relieving the point of the shoulder from undue pressure or liability to become sore or swinneyed by reason of the force of the resistance of thcload being thrown against the point of the blade, as would be the case if such recess in the pad of the collar were not provided.

Havingthus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. A horse-collar constructed to go about the neck of a horse, consisting of the small roll B, the pads A A, and the recesses F F in the pads A A, saidrecessesbeing formed by the inner surface of the pad being drawn back and secured by the cords H H, attached to said inner surface of the pad and passed around a stayrod, G, located in the outside of the filling of the collar, substantially as described.

2. The horse-collar, substantially as described, constructed with an iron stay-rod, G,

located in the outside part of the filling of the collar, and the cords H H, passed around said stay-rod and secured to the inner surface of the case of the pad, whereby the inner surface of the pad is held permanently back, forming a recess in the pad.
