REFLECTOR FOR GAS-LAMPS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRnDEnIo E. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reflectors for Gas-Lamps, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in reflectors for use on gas lamps.
Certain classes of gas lamps, and more especially lamps employing acetylene gas, have a cup-shaped reflector surrounding the burner, said reflector being unprovided with a lens or glass, although the lamp is intended to be used in open air. When such lamps are subjected to a strong air current, as when the lamp is held facing a strong wind, or when it is moved rapidly through the air, as on an automobile or bicycle, the air gathered by the cup-shaped reflector tends to force too much oxygen into the flame so that the flame loses its luminosity, and assumes more or less the characteristics of a Bunsen flame.
It is the object of this invention to produce an improved cup-shaped reflector for use with gas lamps such as have been referred to by which loss of luminosity due to the forcing of too much oxygen into the flame is prevented.
Referring to the drawings :-Figure 1 illustrates a typical acetylene gas lamp provided with a reflector constructed in accordance with the invention, the lamp being shown in elevation and the reflector in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the reflector shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is an acetylene gas lamp, 2 the burner tube, and 3 the burner tip.., The cup-shaped reflector is illustrated at 4. It is provided with a sleeve 5 which surrounds the burner tip and holds the reflector in place.
Reflectors constructed in accordance with the invention will be perforated to allow the escape of some of the air collected by the reflector when the lamp is moving rapidly or is exposed to a strong wind. The perforation or perforations provided for this purpose may be varied in size and location. Care should be taken, however, not to make the perforations so large as to establish too strong a draft directly through the reflector, and care should also be taken not to so locate the perforation or perforations that the flame will be insufliciently protected against side or quartering air currents. In the particular construction illustrated, the reflector is provided with a plurality of holes 6 located comparatively close to the opening through which the burner tube projects. Vith the openings as described, the flame is protected against side and quarter ing drafts and when the lamp is moved rapidly through the air, or is exposed to a strong wind, a certain amount of the air forced into the reflector escapes through the opening or openings, so that the luminosity of the flame is not diminished by the forcing of excess oxygen thereinto.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction by which the invention claimed is carried into effect. The claimed invention is not, therefore, to be confined to the particular construction herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a cup-shaped reflector, of an open flame gas burner projecting through an opening in the base of said reflector, the reflector being perforated at its base to allow the escape of excess air forced into the reflector and thus to prevent too much oxygen from being forced into the flame.
2. The combination with a cup-shaped reflector, of an open flame gas burner projecting through an opening in the base of the reflector, and a plurality of perforations surrounding the base of the burner tube and in proximity thereto.
