T. HIPWELL.
LAMP BURNER.
No. 480,404. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HlPl/VELL, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, ASSIGNOR TO THE MANHATTAN BRASS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAM P-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,404, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed February 25 1892. Serial No. 422,755- (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS I-IIPWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, (Astoria,) in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
Lamp chimneys have heretofore been formed with a bulb and with a nearly-cylindrical base to rest upon the chimney-support and to be held in position by external chimney-springs, and chimneys of this character have sometimes been made with a flattened bulb, the flattening being in the direction in Which the flat flame is spread, in order that such flame may not come into contact at its edges with the glass of the chimney.
With chimneys having flattened bulbs and round or cylindrical bases ditficulty has been experienced in insuring the proper position of the chimney to the metallic portions of the burner, and when such chimney is carelessly placed upon the burner the flame is liable to come in contact with such chimney and break the same.
The object of the present invention is to prevent a chimney being misplaced upon the burner; and with this object in View I provide around the cone or deflector a flange or rim notched at opposite edges, and the lampchimney is provided with inwardly-pressed guide-ribs at opposite sides of the chimney and in such relation to the flattened bulb that the chimney cannot be misplaced upon the burner, because the chimney cannot be set down upon the chimney-rest until it is in the proper position for the inwardly pressed guides to coincide with and pass into the notches of the annular flange around the burner.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the burner and a section of the chimney at the line 00 a:, and Fig. 2 is a'vertical section of the burner and of a portion of the chimney.
The burner is of any desired character. I have represented the wicktube A as surrounded by an air-distributerB and a cone or deflector C, and the chimney-rest D is around the air-distributor B and provided with chimney-springs E, and the annular flange F surrounds the cone or deflector O, and
it may be either plain or perforated, and there are at opposite edges of the annular flangeF notches 2, and the glass chimney G has a cylindrical or nearly-cylindrical base 3 to rest upon the chimney-support D and be held by the springs E, and the bulb portion 4 of the chimney is flattened, so as to be adapted to receiving the flattened flame of the lamp as it is spread within the chimney, and upon the cylindrical portion of the chimney-base and at opposite sides thereof there are inwardlypressed guides 5, adapted to fit loosely the notches 2 in the annular flange F, and these notches and the inwardly-pressed guides are 6 placed in relation to the flat Wick in such a Way that the flattened bulb of the chimney will have its longest axis in the plane of the flat wick-tube, and should there be an effort to put the chimney on when the flattened 7o bulb is not in proper position for the flame the lower ends of the inwardly-pressed guides 5 Would rest upon the annular flange F, so that the chimney could not be passed down upon the chimney-rest until it had been sufficiently rotated to bring the inwardly-pressed guides 5 into line with the notches 2.
This improvement enables me to make use of a flattened-bulb chimney with a flat Wickburner and flame Without the risk of the flame coming into direct contact with the flattened bulb of the chimney.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the lamp-burner having aflat wick-tube and a cone or deflector, of an annular flange around such cone or deflector, having notches at opposite edges thereof, and the flattened-bulb glass chimney having a nearly-cylindrical base and inwardlypressed guides at opposite sides thereof to pass into the notches of the annular deflector, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the flat wickburner having a perforated air-distributor, chimney-rest, and springs, of a cone or defle'ctor, an annular flange around such cone or deflector and attached thereto and having notches in the opposite edges, and a flattenedbulb glass chimney having inwardly-pressed guides at opposite sides to the base thereof, :00
adapted to be reeeivedinto the notches of the of the annular flange, substantially as set annular flange, substantially as set forth. forth. l0
