Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THoMAs CRAIG, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel hia, and l/VILLIAM S. MoLEwEE, residing at ardley, in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lamps, of which the following is 'a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in gas-lamps; and the object of our invention is to make a lamp which will be adapted for general use for illuminating purposes in which the form of construction is greatly simplified and the cost of manufacture greatly reduced.
A further object is to provide a device for attaching the lamp to aiixture having an ordinary lavatip burner, by which device the lamp may be readily placed over the lava-tip burner without removing the same from the fixture, or the lamp when out of order or the mantles broken may be readily removed and the lava-tip burner again brought into use.
A still further object is to provide means for readily attaching or removing either the globe or the reflecting-shade from the lamp.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section in perspective, illustrating our improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device for attaching the lamp.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tube having attached theretoa socket B, in which is formed a conical aperture 1), adapted to fit over the ordinary burner C on the fixture C. Between the coupling B and the tube A is a connecting-piece B, consisting of a disk I), secured to the socket B, the bars 5 and a ring 6 fitting around the end of the tube A. The space 1) between the bars 6 is provided for the admission of air to the tube A, where it becomes thoroughly mixed with the gas from the burner C.
At the top of the tube A is an expansionchamber D, from which the gas is carried to the mantles E through apertures (1, formed in the top D of the chamber D. The bottom plate D of said chamber is provided with screw-threaded apertures to receive the regulating-screws F, having conical points which fit into the apertures d and regulate the flow of gas to the mantles.
-A lug G in the center of the top plate D affords a means for attaching the rod G for supporting the shade-holder G carrying the shade G The shade-holder G is secured to the rod G by the nuts 9 and g.
Upon the tube A is a collar H, held by a set-screw 7L. The collar is provided with arms H, which support the globe-holder H carrying the globe H It will be seen that the globe may be removed by slipping the collar H oil the lower end of the tube A, or the shade G may be removed either by unscrewing the rod G from the plate D of the expansionchamber or by unscrewing the nut g and removing the shade-holder G By this arrangement both the globe and shade may be used or one or the other removed when desired.
It will be understood that we do not limit our invention to the exact construction shown, as one or more burners may be used without departing from our invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent In'a lamp the combination of a tube, a socket having an aperture formed therein to receive an ordinary gas-burner, an expansionchamber on said tube, mantles connected to said expansion-chamber, regulating-screws in said expansion-chamber, a collar on said tube, a globe-holder supported by said collar, a set-screw to hold the said collar, a rod held by said expansion-chamber, a shade-holder carried by said rod, and means for securing said shade-holder to said rod, substantially as described.
